Description
Christophe Pichon Saint Joseph Rouge 2019 is a refined expression of northern Rhône Syrah, balancing pure fruit, spice and a subtle mineral edge. Sourced from some of the appellation’s best sites, it showcases the elegance and precision that have made Christophe Pichon a reference point in Saint-Joseph. This vintage continues the estate’s steady rise in quality since Christophe took over the family domaine in 1991, building on a legacy rooted in some of the Rhône Valley’s most prized slopes.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows a deep ruby to garnet core with violet highlights at the rim, hinting at both concentration and freshness. The nose is classic northern Rhône Syrah: aromas of black cherry, wild blackberry and damson plum layered with cracked black pepper, violets, smoked meat, and a touch of graphite and dried herbs.
On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied with fine, well-integrated tannins and a lively, granite-driven freshness. Dark berry and cherry fruit are wrapped in notes of black olive tapenade, pepper, licorice and a subtle smoky, savory nuance that unfolds with air. The finish is long, focused and gently spicy, suggesting several years of positive development in bottle. While already approachable, the 2019 has the structure to evolve gracefully for 8–10 years from the vintage, gaining complexity and silkiness with time.
Production
The fruit for this Saint Joseph Rouge comes from steep, terraced vineyards on the right bank of the northern Rhône, where Syrah thrives on poor, rocky granite soils that naturally limit yields and intensify flavor. The hand-harvested grapes are carefully sorted to ensure only perfectly ripe bunches are used, reflecting the domaine’s commitment to precision and quality. Traditional vinification emphasizes purity and finesse: the wine is fermented in temperature-controlled vats, often with a proportion of whole bunches to enhance aromatic lift and structure, then aged in French oak (a mix of older barrels and a modest amount of newer wood) to polish the tannins without overwhelming the fruit or terroir character.
Food & Serving
This Saint Joseph Rouge is a versatile food wine that shines with classic French and Mediterranean dishes. Pair it with roast lamb, grilled ribeye, duck breast, game birds, or slow-braised beef and veal. It also works beautifully alongside charcuterie, hard cheeses like Comté or aged Gouda, and earthy preparations featuring mushrooms, lentils or root vegetables. Serve at 16–18°C; if the wine is young or just opened, a short decant of 30–60 minutes helps the aromatics and texture fully open up, especially in the first few years after release.
Producer
Christophe Pichon took over the family estate from his father in 1991 and has steadily transformed it into one of the most respected domaines in the northern Rhône. With holdings in some of the finest sites of Saint-Joseph, Condrieu and Côte-Rôtie, the domaine is known for its meticulous work in the vineyards and its precise, terroir-driven style in the cellar. Pichon’s wines have become benchmarks for purity, balance and elegance in the region, earning strong recognition from critics and sommeliers alike, and helping to underline the prestige of Saint-Joseph as a source of serious, ageworthy Syrah.
