Description
Christophe Pichon Côte-Rôtie Rozier 2019 is a refined and expressive red from one of the appellation’s most coveted lieux-dits. Crafted from 94% Syrah and 6% Viognier, it captures the hallmark tension between power and perfume that defines great Côte-Rôtie. This cuvée stands out for its precision, length, and the way it marries red-fruited elegance with finely etched spice, all framed by judicious oak aging.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Rozier presents a deep ruby core with violet highlights, showing both concentration and youthful energy. The nose is lifted and complex, offering aromas of ripe red berries, raspberry and wild strawberry, layered with black cherry, cracked pepper, violets, dried herbs and a subtle touch of sweet spice from its time in oak.
On the palate, the wine is balanced and long, with a silky yet structured mouthfeel. Red and dark fruits unfold slowly—think redcurrant, cherry and a hint of blackberry—interlaced with notes of black pepper, licorice, smoked meat and a fine mineral thread. The Viognier component adds a floral lift and a touch of suppleness to the mid-palate. Tannins are refined but present, promising graceful development. While already approachable with a short decant, this 2019 has the stuffing to age beautifully for 10–15 years under good cellaring conditions, gaining complexity and tertiary nuances over time.
Production
Rozier is sourced from steep, terraced vineyards on the Côte Brune side of Côte-Rôtie, where dark schist and mica-rich soils give naturally low yields and intensely flavored fruit. The Syrah and Viognier are typically harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, a necessity on these demanding slopes, with careful sorting to ensure only the healthiest bunches make it to the cellar. Traditional Côte-Rôtie methods are followed, often with some co-fermentation of Syrah and Viognier to enhance color stability and aromatic lift. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled vessels, with gentle extraction to preserve finesse rather than brute force. The wine is then aged for about 13 months in oak barrels, including a proportion of new oak, which lends subtle spice, polish and structure without overwhelming the natural character of the fruit and terroir.
Food & Serving
This Côte-Rôtie is a superb match for classic red meat dishes: grilled or roasted lamb, ribeye steak, beef rib roast and game birds like duck or pigeon. It also pairs beautifully with slow-braised dishes—beef daube, lamb shanks, or venison stew—as well as earthy accompaniments such as mushrooms, lentils and root vegetables. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and freshness. Young vintages benefit from 1–2 hours in a decanter to allow the wine to open and soften the tannins; as it ages, a gentle decant shortly before serving will help separate any sediment and let the bouquet fully express itself.
