Description

Christophe Pichon Cornas “Allégorie” 2019 is a powerful, characterful northern Rhône Syrah that captures Cornas in a particularly generous vintage. Crafted from steep, sun-drenched granite slopes, it offers both depth and precision, with the hallmark sauvage edge that Cornas lovers seek. This cuvée marries muscular structure with refined craftsmanship, reflecting Christophe Pichon’s meticulous approach and long experience in the great appellations of the northern Rhône.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Allégorie shows a deep, almost opaque ruby core with purple reflections along the rim, signaling its concentration and youth. The nose is intense and layered: blackberries and black cherries mingle with notes of violet, cracked black pepper, smoked meat, and tapenade, supported by hints of graphite, dried herbs, and a subtle touch of oak spice. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, firmly structured, and expansive, yet surprisingly well-poised. Ripe dark fruit—blackcurrant, blueberry, and plum—is wrapped in Cornas’ typical savory tones of game, black olive, and charred earth. The tannins are abundant but fine-grained, giving the wine both grip and elegance, while a fresh, mineral backbone from the granite soil keeps everything lifted. The finish is long, spicy, and slightly smoky, promising excellent development in the bottle. Enjoyable now with a good decant, it has the stuffing to age gracefully for 10–15 years or more, gaining complexity and softness over time.

Production
Cornas is one of the northern Rhône’s most dramatic terroirs, with steep, terraced vineyards rooted in decomposed granite that drain well and radiate heat, allowing Syrah to reach impressive ripeness while retaining freshness. Grapes for Christophe Pichon’s Allégorie are typically harvested by hand, parcel by parcel, to ensure optimal maturity and careful selection on these challenging slopes. In the cellar, traditional northern Rhône methods prevail: gentle extraction during fermentation to preserve fruit purity and structure, followed by élevage in oak—often a mix of older barrels and some newer wood—allowing the wine to integrate tannins, gain texture, and express the mineral, spicy character of Cornas without being dominated by oak.

Food & Serving
This Cornas shines alongside hearty, flavor-packed dishes: think grilled or roasted lamb, braised beef short ribs, venison, or wild boar, as well as duck with black olive or red wine sauces. It also works beautifully with rustic French fare—cassoulet, daube provençale, or dishes featuring mushrooms, lentils, and root vegetables—and aged, hard cheeses such as Comté or mature Tomme. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) for optimal balance. In its youth, decanting for 1–2 hours is strongly recommended to soften the tannins and open up the aromatic layers; with more bottle age, a shorter, gentle decant will be sufficient to let the wine fully express itself.

Producer
Christophe Pichon took over the family estate in 1991 and has since established himself as a respected name in the northern Rhône, steadily expanding both vineyard holdings and reputation. Based in Condrieu, the domaine is best known for its painstaking work in some of the region’s most coveted appellations, including Saint-Joseph, Condrieu, Côte-Rôtie—and now Cornas—where steep slopes and low yields demand a hands-on, artisanal approach. Pichon’s wines are recognized for their combination of ripeness, finesse, and a clear expression of terroir, earning a loyal following among Rhône enthusiasts and a strong presence on the lists of fine restaurants and specialist wine merchants across Europe.
