Description

Chateau Valade Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2021 is a refined right-bank Bordeaux that captures the elegance and charm of Merlot-driven claret. Crafted from a tiny, family-owned estate in Saint-Émilion, this wine offers impressive depth and purity for those seeking authentic terroir expression. With limited production and meticulous care from vine to bottle, it’s a compelling choice for both cellaring and enjoying in its youth.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Chateau Valade Saint-Emilion Grand Cru shows a deep ruby colour with bright, youthful reflections along the rim. The nose is inviting and refined, offering aromas of ripe red plum, black cherry and blackberry, layered with notes of violets, subtle cedar, graphite, and a hint of baking spice and cocoa from its time in oak. On the palate, this is a medium to full-bodied wine with silky tannins and a fresh, balanced acidity that reflects the cooler 2021 vintage. Merlot brings plush fruit and a supple texture, while Cabernet Franc adds lift, floral tones and a subtle savoury edge. Flavours of dark berries, plum compote and redcurrant unfold alongside hints of tobacco leaf, moist earth and spice, leading into a long, poised finish. Enjoyable now with a short decant, it has the structure to evolve gracefully over the next 6–10 years, gaining complexity and softness with bottle age.

Production
Chateau Valade is a small, 4-hectare estate in Saint-Émilion, where clay and limestone soils provide ideal conditions for Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The vineyard is planted to approximately 95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc, all tended by the same family that has run the property for five generations. Yields are kept low to prioritise concentration and quality, with careful, often manual work in the vines and selective harvesting at optimal ripeness. In the cellar, traditional right-bank methods are followed: gentle extraction during fermentation to preserve fruit purity and fine tannins, followed by élevage in carefully selected barrels to add complexity and structure without overwhelming the wine’s natural elegance. Annual production is small, at around 6,000 bottles, emphasizing craftsmanship over volume.

Food & Serving
This Saint-Émilion Grand Cru pairs beautifully with classic dishes such as roast lamb, beef fillet, duck breast, and slow-braised short ribs, as well as earthy plates like mushroom risotto, truffle pasta, or roasted root vegetables. It also complements aged hard cheeses and mild blue cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatics and texture. Young vintages like 2021 benefit from 1–2 hours of decanting to open up the bouquet and soften the tannins; as it ages, a shorter decant to remove sediment will be sufficient.

Producer
Château Valade is a fifth-generation, family-owned estate rooted in the ancient winemaking traditions of Saint-Émilion. Over the decades, the family has carefully nurtured their compact 4-hectare holding, focusing on Merlot and Cabernet Franc to express the classic right-bank style. As a small producer, Chateau Valade plays an important role in preserving the identity of Saint-Émilion’s artisanal, terroir-driven wines, standing in contrast to larger, more industrial operations. Their dedication to hands-on viticulture and thoughtful cellar work has earned them a quiet but solid reputation among knowledgeable Bordeaux drinkers looking for authentic, characterful Grand Cru at a still-approachable level.
