Description
Château Talbot Saint-Julien 2022 is a poised and expressive red Bordeaux that captures the classic character of this prestigious commune. Led by Cabernet Sauvignon and supported by Merlot and Petit Verdot, it offers a generous bouquet and a structure built for both early pleasure and long-term aging. As a historic 4ème Cru Classé estate, Talbot has long been considered one of the benchmarks for Saint-Julien, uniting concentration, complexity and elegance in a distinctly refined style.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Château Talbot shows a deep, vibrant ruby-purple hue, signaling both ripeness and youth. The nose is expressive and layered, with vivid black fruits—blackcurrant, blackberry and black cherry—interwoven with red cherries, subtle floral notes, and a touch of graphite. Hints of leather-like spice, tobacco leaf, and cedar emerge with air, alongside a gentle smokiness and fresh herbal accents.
On the palate, this is fruit-forward yet classically structured: juicy black fruit and red cherry tones sit on a framework of fine, ripe tannins and lively acidity. The herbal, almost savory edge brings lift and precision, while notes of leather, clove, cocoa and a discreet toasted oak character build complexity. The finish is long, silky and slightly smoky, with a lingering impression of dark berries and spice. With its balance and concentration, the 2022 has excellent aging potential: it should begin drinking well after 5–7 years in bottle and continue to evolve gracefully for 15–20 years or more in good cellaring conditions.
Production
Château Talbot’s vineyards lie in the heart of Saint-Julien, bordered by some of the appellation’s most revered estates, on the classic Garonne gravel terraces that define great Left Bank Cabernet. These deep gravel soils, mixed with sand and pockets of clay, offer excellent drainage, concentrating flavors while preserving freshness and finesse. The 2022 blend is 69% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot, sourced from mature vines carefully tended and harvested parcel by parcel, typically by hand to ensure optimal selection. In the cellar, the wine is vinified in temperature-controlled vessels to extract fine tannins and pure fruit, followed by élevage in French oak barrels (a proportion new) where it develops its signature harmony of structure, complexity and elegance before bottling.
Food & Serving
Château Talbot Saint-Julien 2022 is a natural partner for classic, refined cuisine: think roast lamb with rosemary and garlic, grilled ribeye or côte de boeuf, duck breast, or veal chops with a red wine jus. It also pairs beautifully with game birds, mushroom-based dishes, and aged hard cheeses such as Comté or mature cheddar. Serve at 16–18°C, ideally after allowing the bottle to come gently to temperature. For drinking in its youth, decant 1–2 hours before serving to open up the bouquet and soften the tannins; with further bottle age, a shorter 30–45 minute decant will be sufficient to let the wine fully express its complexity.
Producer
Château Talbot is one of the historic names of Saint-Julien, classified as a 4ème Cru Classé in the 1855 Classification and named after the English military commander John Talbot, Earl of Shrewsbury, who fell at the Battle of Castillon in 1453. Located in the very heart of the appellation, the estate shares borders with icons such as Léoville-Las Cases, Léoville Barton and Léoville Poyferré, and is widely regarded as a reference point for the quintessential Saint-Julien style. Owned for five generations by the Bignon-Cordier family, Talbot has seen a steady rise in quality, supported by the expertise of renowned consultants Éric Boissenot and Stéphane Derenoncourt. Today, the château is celebrated internationally for producing wines that consistently balance depth, precision and elegance, earning strong critical acclaim vintage after vintage.
