Description

Château Soutard Saint-Émilion Grand Cru 2020 is a poised and polished Right Bank Bordeaux that captures the elegance of its historic limestone plateau. Crafted from a classic blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and a touch of Malbec, it offers both immediate pleasure and serious aging potential. As one of the emblematic estates of Saint-Émilion, Château Soutard brings centuries of winemaking heritage into a modern, finely sculpted grand cru.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Château Soutard shows a deep, vibrant ruby-purple hue, hinting at its concentration and youth. The nose is refined and layered, with ripe black cherry, cassis and plum interwoven with notes of violets, graphite, cedar, and a subtle hint of mocha and spice from barrel aging. On the palate, this wine is medium to full-bodied with silky yet structured tannins, balancing ripe dark fruits with fresh red berry lift. Flavors of blackcurrant, red cherry, and damson are supported by savory notes of tobacco leaf, cocoa, and a chalky mineral edge that speaks clearly of Saint-Émilion’s limestone soils. The finish is long, pure, and focused, with a graceful freshness that promises development over time. While already approachable with a short decant, this 2020 has the structure and balance to age gracefully for 10–15+ years under good cellaring conditions.

Production
Château Soutard sits on the prized limestone plateau just outside the medieval village of Saint-Émilion, where thin clay soils over limestone bedrock give naturally low yields and a distinct mineral tension to the wines. Merlot dominates the plantings, complemented by Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec, each parcel tended with meticulous vineyard work, including careful canopy management and selective green harvesting to ensure optimal ripeness. Grapes are harvested parcel by parcel at peak maturity, often by hand, then sorted to retain only the healthiest berries. Vinification typically takes place in a combination of temperature-controlled vats, with gentle extraction to preserve finesse rather than power, followed by élevage in French oak barrels (a proportion new) to build texture, complexity and aromatic depth without overwhelming the fruit.

Food & Serving
This Saint-Émilion Grand Cru is a natural partner for classic dishes such as roast lamb with herbs, beef tenderloin, duck breast, and veal in rich jus, as well as game birds and truffle-infused dishes. It also pairs beautifully with hard cheeses like Comté, aged Gouda, or a well-matured Gruyère. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and freshness. In its youth, decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to soften the tannins and open up the bouquet; as it matures, a shorter decant mainly to remove sediment will suffice.

Producer
Château Soutard is one of Saint-Émilion’s historic estates, with winemaking roots dating back to the 18th century and a striking classical château surrounded by contiguous vineyard holdings. Over the past decades, significant investment and careful modernization have elevated Soutard into the upper echelon of Saint-Émilion Grand Cru properties, while preserving the estate’s traditional identity and sense of place. Its location on the limestone plateau, combined with a focus on precision viticulture and thoughtful cellar work, has earned the château a strong reputation among Bordeaux enthusiasts for wines that marry depth and structure with elegance, purity of fruit, and clear expression of terroir.
