Description
Château Ségur de Cabanac Saint-Estèphe 2021 is a classic left-bank Bordeaux that quietly overdelivers for its humble Cru Bourgeois status. Crafted from 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot, it captures the trademark power and structure of Saint-Estèphe while remaining polished and approachable. With 30-year-old vines rooted in the famed Graves terroir and a full 20 months of barrel aging, this is a wine that marries Médoc tradition with meticulous, modern craftsmanship.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Château Ségur de Cabanac shows a deep, vibrant ruby color with purple reflections at the rim, signaling its youth and energy. The nose opens with layers of blackcurrant, ripe red cherry and plum, followed by notes of cedar, graphite, dried herbs and a subtle touch of tobacco and vanilla from its time in barrel.
On the palate, the wine is full-bodied yet harmoniously balanced, with firm, chalky Saint-Estèphe tannins wrapped around a core of dark berry fruit and red currant. Hints of licorice, crushed stone and a gentle spice linger on the finish, giving both freshness and length. The structure and acidity suggest solid aging potential: this 2021 will drink well in its youth with a short decant, but should evolve beautifully over 8–12 years, gaining complexity, softness and more tertiary, savory nuances with time in bottle.
Production
Château Ségur de Cabanac’s 7 hectares of vines are planted on classic Saint-Estèphe Graves terroir—deep gravel over clay and limestone—which provides excellent drainage while retaining enough moisture to support vine health in warmer seasons. The average vine age is around 30 years, giving naturally lower yields and good concentration in the fruit. The grapes, 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot, are carefully harvested by hand to ensure only the healthiest bunches reach the cellar. After sorting, the wine is vinified traditionally, with controlled fermentations designed to extract color, aroma and fine tannins rather than harshness. It is then matured entirely in barrels for 20 months, allowing the wine to gain texture, complexity and subtle oak integration without losing the purity of its fruit or its sense of place.
Food & Serving
This Saint-Estèphe is a natural partner for classic meat dishes: think roast lamb with herbs, entrecôte steak, beef stew, venison, duck breast or hearty dishes featuring mushrooms and root vegetables. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses such as Comté, Manchego or mature cheddar. Serve at 16–18°C (about 60–64°F) to show the wine at its best. Young bottles will benefit from 1–2 hours in a decanter to soften the tannins and open up the bouquet; as it gains age, a gentle decant to remove sediment and 30–45 minutes of air will usually be sufficient.
Producer
Château Ségur de Cabanac is a respected Cru Bourgeois estate in Saint-Estèphe, in the Médoc heartland of Bordeaux. The property is owned by the Delon family, who have been making wine in the Médoc for seven generations and also own Château Moulin de la Rose in Saint-Julien. Since purchasing Ségur de Cabanac in 1985, Guy Delon, together with his children Jean-François and Guylène, has focused on expressing the character of the estate’s gravelly terroir through careful vineyard work and traditional winemaking. Renowned consulting oenologist Eric Boissenot advises the château, bringing additional precision and finesse to the wines. Today, Château Ségur de Cabanac is known as a reliable source of powerful yet refined Saint-Estèphe that reflects both its Cru Bourgeois heritage and the long-standing expertise of the Delon family in the Médoc.
