Description

Chateau Rocheyron Grand Cru 2021 is a refined, modern Saint-Émilion crafted by the legendary Peter Sisseck together with Silvio Denz. This is a Bordeaux that blends depth and concentration with the lifted freshness Sisseck now actively seeks, made from Merlot and Cabernet Franc grown on prime limestone terroir. The wine reflects a new chapter for Rocheyron, where massive investment in the vineyard and cellar has been paired with a clear vision: to capture Bordeaux’s signature finesse rather than sheer power.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Chateau Rocheyron Grand Cru 2021 shows a deep ruby core with youthful purple highlights, signalling both concentration and freshness. The nose is layered and precise, offering ripe black cherry and plum alongside redcurrant, violet, and subtle notes of graphite, cedar, and pencil shavings, with a fine backdrop of sweet spices and a touch of cocoa from careful oak maturation. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, poised rather than heavy, with silky tannins wrapped around a core of dark berries, plum and a hint of cassis from the Cabernet Franc. Fresh acidity gives the wine real lift and tension, balancing its ripe fruit and adding a savoury, mineral edge typical of Saint-Émilion’s limestone plateau. The finish is long and elegant, with lingering notes of crushed berries, spice and wet stone. Enjoyable in its youth with a brief decant, it has the structure and balance to develop gracefully over 10–15 years, gaining further complexity and tertiary nuances of truffle, tobacco and forest floor.

Production
Chateau Rocheyron lies on the high limestone and clay-limestone plateau close to Château Laroque in Saint-Émilion, a site that has hosted vines for generations. The vineyard is in the midst of a demanding conversion to organic farming, with meticulous work in the rows to enhance biodiversity, limit yields and allow the Merlot and Cabernet Franc to translate the character of the soils and exposure. Harvest is carried out by hand, parcel by parcel, to bring in each plot at optimal ripeness. In the cellar, Sisseck aims for precision and purity: gentle extraction, controlled fermentations in temperature-regulated tanks, and a thoughtful élevage in French oak barrels – a mix of new and used – that polishes the wine without masking its terroir. The overall objective is not to chase high alcohol and blockbuster power, but to sculpt a wine of definition, finesse and vibrant freshness.

Food & Serving
Chateau Rocheyron Grand Cru 2021 is an excellent partner for classic dishes such as roast lamb with herbs, beef tenderloin, duck breast, and veal with truffle jus. It also pairs beautifully with game birds, mushroom-based dishes, and aged hard cheeses like Comté or mature Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C to highlight its aromatics and balance; in its youth, a 1–2 hour decant will help the wine open and soften the tannins. As it gains bottle age, a shorter decant purely for aeration will be sufficient, allowing its more nuanced, tertiary bouquet to unfold gradually in the glass.

Producer
Chateau Rocheyron is a relatively young yet already highly regarded name in Saint-Émilion, reborn when Danish-born winemaker Peter Sisseck – famed for his iconic Pingus in Ribera del Duero – and Spanish entrepreneur Silvio Denz acquired the 7-hectare estate in 2010. The property, long under vine but in need of serious attention, has since been transformed through extensive investment in both vineyard and cellar, and a clear focus on quality over quantity. Sisseck’s return to Bordeaux, where he first trained as a vigneron, has brought a fresh perspective to this historic terroir, combining deep local knowledge with the precision and low-intervention ethos that made him world-famous. Today, Chateau Rocheyron stands as one of the most exciting small estates in the region, emblematic of a new wave of Saint-Émilion producers committed to organic farming, terroir expression and wines of elegance rather than excess.
