Description

Château Rocheyron Grand Cru 2017 is a powerful, Merlot-driven Saint-Émilion that brings together right-bank heritage with the vision of world-renowned winemaker Peter Sisseck. Sourced from a small, historic 7-hectare estate on Bordeaux’s limestone plateau, this is a bold, deeply satisfying red for those who enjoy richly textured, modern Bordeaux. The 2017 vintage embodies Rocheyron’s journey from neglected property to a meticulously farmed Grand Cru estate now firmly on the radar of serious collectors.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Château Rocheyron Grand Cru 2017 shows a deep, saturated ruby core with a dark garnet rim, hinting at both concentration and evolving complexity. The nose opens with ripe black plum, blackberry compote and black cherry, followed by notes of mocha, sweet spice, licorice and a touch of cedar from barrel aging. With air, more subtle layers emerge: dried violets, graphite and a faint hint of warm earth. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, dense and richly fruited, very much in the vein of a modern, opulent right-bank Bordeaux. The Merlot delivers velvety, ripe tannins wrapped around flavors of dark berries, plum, cocoa and baking spice, with a broad, almost creamy mid-palate. This is not a wine driven by high-strung finesse, but by depth, volume and a near-californian sense of richness and concentration. The finish is long and warming, with lingering fruit and spice. While already approachable with some aeration, the 2017 has the structure and extract to evolve positively over the next 8–12 years, gaining further tertiary complexity—truffle, tobacco, and forest floor—while the tannins continue to soften.

Production
Château Rocheyron lies on the storied limestone and clay soils of Saint-Émilion, on vineyards that border the esteemed Château Laroque. These well-exposed parcels, where vines have been cultivated “forever” in local memory, offer Merlot an ideal mix of good drainage, mineral-rich subsoils and moderated ripening. The estate’s vines are 15–30 years old, and under Peter Sisseck’s guidance the property is being painstakingly converted to organic farming—an involved, long-term process aimed at unlocking the full potential of the terroir. Grapes are harvested by hand to ensure optimal selection in the vineyard, then carefully sorted before vinification. The 2017 Grand Cru is made from 100% Merlot, fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel to preserve purity of fruit and precision. After fermentation, the wine was aged for around 14 months in once-used French oak barrels (inherited from Château Faugères), allowing it to gain texture and complexity without overwhelming the fruit with new oak.

Food & Serving
Château Rocheyron Grand Cru 2017 is a natural match for rich, flavorful dishes that can stand up to its concentration. Think classic roast lamb with rosemary and garlic, beef ribeye or cote de boeuf, slow-braised beef cheeks, duck breast with red wine reduction, or game dishes such as venison. It also pairs beautifully with hearty mushroom dishes, truffle-infused cuisine and aged hard cheeses like Comté or mature Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–65°F) to keep the freshness and structure in balance with the richness of the fruit. Decanting is strongly recommended: give it at least 1–2 hours in a carafe to soften the tannins and allow the layers of dark fruit, spice and earth to fully unfold.

Producer
Château Rocheyron is a relatively new name with deep roots. The estate as it stands today was born in 2009, when Danish-born star winemaker Peter Sisseck—famous for creating Pingus in Ribera del Duero—teamed up with Spanish entrepreneur Silvio Denz to acquire a 7-hectare parcel adjoining Château Laroque in Saint-Émilion. When Sisseck took over, Rocheyron was in poor condition, with outdated cellar equipment and wines vinified elsewhere; the early vintages were even made in a corner of Château Faugères’ cellar. Since then, major investments have been made in both vineyard and winery, with a clear objective: to elevate this Grand Cru property to the highest level while expressing the elegance and freshness that Sisseck believes are Bordeaux’s true gift to the wine world. The conversion to organic viticulture and the move toward ever more refined, terroir-driven wines have quickly put Château Rocheyron on the map as one of the most exciting, quality-focused estates in modern Saint-Émilion.
