Description

Chateau Rocheyron Grand Cru 2015 is a powerful, Merlot-driven Saint-Émilion Grand Cru from Bordeaux, crafted in the outstanding 2015 vintage. This is a bold, richly textured red that leans into concentration and opulence more than classic restraint, making it a compelling choice for lovers of full-bodied Bordeaux. Produced under the direction of famed winemaker Peter Sisseck, it captures an early chapter in the estate’s transformation toward greater finesse and organic precision.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Chateau Rocheyron Grand Cru 2015 shows a deep, opaque ruby to garnet hue with a dense core and slow-forming legs that immediately signal its richness and high natural alcohol. The nose is generous and enveloping, with ripe black plum, black cherry and blackberry compote at the forefront, layered with notes of dark chocolate, mocha, sweet spice, and hints of cedar and tobacco from its time in oak. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and mouth-filling, with a velvety, almost glycerol texture and a distinctly ripe, sun-kissed fruit profile. Expect concentrated flavors of plum, blackcurrant and black cherry, supported by notes of licorice, vanilla, roasted coffee bean and a touch of graphite. Tannins are abundant but rounded, giving a dense, chewy structure that will soften further with time. The finish is long and warming, with a lingering impression of dark fruit and spice. While approachable now for those who enjoy powerful, plush Bordeaux, the wine still has several years of positive evolution ahead; it should drink well through the mid to late 2030s as the fruit, tannin and oak continue to knit together.

Production
Chateau Rocheyron lies in Saint-Émilion, on limestone- and clay-rich soils that have long been prized for Merlot, offering both structure and natural freshness beneath the richness of the fruit. The 2015 Grand Cru is made entirely from Merlot, sourced from 15–30-year-old vines that benefit from careful, increasingly organic-minded vineyard work as part of Peter Sisseck’s long-term vision for the estate. Grapes are harvested at optimal ripeness to capture both depth and purity, then fermented in stainless steel to preserve varietal character and control temperature precisely. After fermentation, the wine is aged for around 14 months in once-used French oak barrels sourced from Château Faugères, allowing it to gain complexity, texture and subtle oak nuances without overwhelming the fruit.

Food & Serving
This is a superb match for hearty, richly flavored dishes that can stand up to its intensity and volume. Think ribeye or côte de boeuf, slow-braised beef short ribs, lamb shank, confit or roasted duck, and game dishes with dark, savory sauces. It also pairs beautifully with truffle-inflected dishes, wild mushroom ragouts and aged hard cheeses such as Comté or aged Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to balance freshness and aromatic expression. Given its youth and density, decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to allow the tannins to soften and the layered bouquet to fully open.

Producer
Chateau Rocheyron is a relatively young yet already highly regarded name in Saint-Émilion, relaunched as a joint venture between Danish-born star winemaker Peter Sisseck (of Pingus fame in Ribera del Duero) and Spanish entrepreneur Silvio Denz. They acquired the 7-hectare property in 2009, on land bordering the esteemed Château Laroque, where vines have been cultivated “forever” by local standards. When Sisseck took over, the estate and cellar were in poor condition, and early vintages were even vinified off-site at neighboring properties. Since then, significant investment has gone into both vineyard and cellar, with a long-term move toward organic farming and a clear aim: not simply to make powerful, dark wines, but to capture the refined freshness and finesse that define great Bordeaux. In a short time, Chateau Rocheyron has become one of the most intriguing, quality-driven projects in Saint-Émilion, bridging Sisseck’s world-class experience in Spain with his roots in Bordeaux.
