In the glass, Chateau Rocheyron Grand Cru 2014 shows a deep, opaque ruby to garnet core with a vivid, almost black-cherry rim, hinting at its concentration and ongoing youth. The nose is intense and layered: ripe black plum, black cherry and blackberry compote are supported by notes of cocoa, espresso, sweet spice, and a touch of cedar and cigar box from barrel aging. With air, more nuanced tones of graphite, dried violets, and a faint mineral edge begin to emerge. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, plush and enveloping, with a distinctly opulent, almost Californian sense of richness. The Merlot delivers a mouthfilling core of dark, ripe fruit framed by velvety but firm tannins and a generous alcohol level that adds warmth and volume. Flavors of black currant, plum and dark chocolate mingle with hints of licorice, toasted oak and baking spices, leading into a long, powerful finish. Production
Chateau Rocheyron sits on coveted Saint-Émilion terroir bordering Château Laroque, on soils that have been planted to vines for generations. The Merlot vines, roughly 15–30 years old, draw deeply from a mix of limestone and clay that imparts both power and a distinct mineral backbone to the fruit. Grapes are harvested by hand to ensure meticulous selection, then fermented in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks to preserve purity and control extraction. Following fermentation, the wine is aged for around 14 months in French oak barrels, including one-year-old barrels sourced from Château Faugères, allowing the wood to lend structure, polish and subtle complexity without overwhelming the natural character of the Merlot or the freshness that Sisseck seeks to highlight.

This is a generous, gastronomic Bordeaux that shines alongside rich, flavor-packed dishes. Think dry-aged ribeye with herb butter, slow-braised lamb shanks, duck breast with a red wine reduction, or classic French fare like beef bourguignon and confit de canard. It also works beautifully with hard cheeses such as Comté, aged Gouda or a well-matured Cheddar. Chateau Rocheyron is a relatively young project with deep roots in Bordeaux history, brought back to life by renowned Danish winemaker Peter Sisseck—famed for the cult Ribera del Duero wine Pingus—and his Spanish partner, Silvio Denz. When they acquired the 7-hectare parcel near Château Laroque in 2009, the estate was in a tired state, and the early vintages were even vinified and matured in borrowed corners of neighboring cellars while Rocheyron was rebuilt. Sisseck has since invested heavily both in the vineyard and the chai, steering the property toward organic farming and a more terroir-driven style that emphasizes finesse and freshness over sheer extraction and alcohol. Today, Chateau Rocheyron is seen as one of the most compelling “new old” names in Saint-Émilion, a Grand Cru estate that combines top-flight Right Bank terroir with the vision and technical mastery of one of Europe’s most respected winemakers.
