Description
Château Rieussec 1er Cru Classé from Sauternes is one of Bordeaux’s most celebrated sweet wines, admired for its richness, precision, and unmistakable sense of luxury. The 2010 vintage combines the classic botrytised depth of Sémillon with the freshness of Sauvignon Blanc and the aromatic lift of Muscadelle, making it a beautifully balanced dessert wine with real pedigree.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep, luminous golden color that immediately signals concentration and maturity. The nose is generous and layered, with aromas of honey, toasted almonds, ripe pineapple, and subtle floral notes unfolding into a rich, inviting bouquet.
On the palate, the wine is full and silky, with flavors of mango, papaya, mandarin, and candied citrus wrapped in a refined sweetness. Despite its opulence, it retains a graceful line of acidity that keeps the wine elegant and fresh, and the finish is long, warm, and persistent with lingering notes of honeyed stone fruit and tropical fruit. This is a wine with excellent aging potential and the structure to evolve beautifully over many years.
Production
Château Rieussec is located in the heart of Sauternes, where morning mists from the Ciron and Garonne rivers encourage the noble rot, Botrytis cinerea, that gives the region’s wines their signature richness and complexity. The vineyards are planted on gravelly, sandy, and clay-limestone soils that help preserve freshness while supporting optimal ripening. Harvesting is carried out by hand in multiple selective passes to pick only perfectly botrytised grapes, and the wine is vinified with great care to preserve balance, purity, and aromatic intensity.
Food & Serving
Serve this wine slightly chilled, ideally around 8–10°C, to highlight its freshness and complexity. It pairs wonderfully with fruit-based desserts, tarte Tatin, crème brûlée, blue cheese, foie gras, or simply enjoyed on its own as a luxurious after-dinner wine. Decanting is generally not necessary for this format, though a brief aeration can help open the aromas if the wine is served young.
Producer
Château Rieussec is one of the historic estates of Sauternes and was classified as Premier Cru Classé in the 1855 Bordeaux classification, a recognition that underlines its long-standing reputation for excellence. Once owned by the Carmelite monks of Langon, the property later became part of the prestigious Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite), further strengthening its standing in the region. Today, Rieussec is widely regarded as a benchmark for Sauternes, known for producing wines of remarkable concentration, elegance, and aging capacity.
