Description
Château Rayas Châteauneuf-du-Pape Réserve Blanc 2013 is one of the Rhône Valley’s most elusive and coveted white wines, produced in tiny quantities and adored by serious collectors. This is a rare chance to discover a white Châteauneuf‑du‑Pape that combines remarkable purity, depth and finesse with the unmistakable personality of this iconic estate. The 2013 vintage offers a beautifully poised expression of Rayas’ old-vine fruit and its singular sandy terroir.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the Rayas CNDP Réserve Blanc 2013 shows a luminous straw-gold hue that deepens with a touch of age, hinting at its concentration and complexity. The nose is highly expressive yet refined, with layers of ripe stone fruits (peach, apricot), preserved lemon, acacia blossom and almond, underpinned by notes of anise, fennel, and a subtle chalky minerality. With air, nuances of beeswax, chamomile, and light brioche emerge, signaling the wine’s evolving maturity.
On the palate, this 2013 is textural and layered, with a generous, almost glycerol mouthfeel balanced by a finely etched line of acidity. Flavors of white nectarine, citrus oil, pear and yellow plum are interwoven with hints of honey, bitter almond, and herbal garrigue notes. The finish is long, savory and saline, with impressive persistence and a sense of quiet power rather than flashiness. 2013 is a vintage that has developed beautifully in bottle: it is drinking very well now, yet properly stored bottles still have several years of graceful evolution ahead, gaining more nuttiness, waxy texture and complexity over time.
Production
Château Rayas is famed for its unusually sandy, cool terroir within Châteauneuf-du-Pape, a stark contrast to the region’s typical galets roulés (large pebbles). The estate’s old vines, mainly Grenache Blanc and Clairette for the white Réserve, are deeply rooted in these fine, pale sands, giving naturally low yields and a striking finesse to the wines. Harvesting is done by hand, with meticulous selection of bunches to ensure perfect ripeness and health. In the cellar, the philosophy is decidedly traditional and low‑intervention: gentle pressing, fermentation at controlled temperatures, and aging in neutral vessels (often older barrels or large foudres) to preserve the purity of fruit, texture and terroir expression rather than overlaying oak influence. The result is a white Châteauneuf‑du‑Pape of great transparency, concentration and longevity.
Food & Serving
The richness and structure of Rayas CNDP Réserve Blanc 2013 make it a superb partner for refined, flavorful cuisine. It pairs beautifully with roast poultry (especially chicken or guinea fowl with morel cream sauce), veal in light jus, lobster or langoustines, seared scallops, and rich fish dishes such as halibut or turbot with beurre blanc. It can also stand up to dishes featuring truffle, mushroom sauces or aged hard cheeses like Comté. For optimal enjoyment, serve at 11–13°C (52–55°F); too cold and the complexity will be muted. Decanting for 30–45 minutes is recommended, particularly at this age, to allow the wine to fully open and reveal its layered aromatics and silky texture.
Producer
Château Rayas is one of the most legendary and singular estates in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, long regarded as a benchmark for both red and white wines from the Southern Rhône. Founded in the late 19th century and stewarded by the Reynaud family for generations, the domaine sits on a unique north‑facing, cool site dominated by fine, pale sands rather than the region’s typical stones. This special terroir, combined with old vines, low yields and a resolutely traditional, minimalist approach in the cellar, has given Rayas an almost mythical status among wine lovers. The estate’s wines are known for their finesse, perfume and longevity rather than sheer power, and its limited production means bottles like the Rayas CNDP Réserve Blanc 2013 are highly sought after by collectors and connoisseurs worldwide.
