Description
This limited edition “Les Grands Millésimes” kist from Château Potensac brings together six outstanding vintages – 2006, 2009, 2010, 2015, 2016 and 2018 – in a single collector’s case. It’s a rare chance to follow the evolution of one of the Médoc’s most respected estates across both classic and great years. Combining mature bottles ready to enjoy with younger wines still on the rise, this set is ideal for the cellar, for vertical tastings, or as an exceptional gift for any serious Bordeaux lover.
Tasting Notes
Château Potensac is known for its deep ruby color in youth, evolving toward garnet with age. In this kist, the older vintages (2006, 2009, 2010) show more evolved hues and a softer rim, while the younger wines (2015, 2016, 2018) remain vividly colored and energetic. The nose across the selection is very classically Left Bank: blackcurrant, blackberry and plum layered with cedar, graphite, tobacco leaf and a subtle earthiness. With age, notes of leather, dried flowers and cigar box emerge, while the younger years lean more toward vibrant dark fruit, violets and a touch of spice.
On the palate, these wines are typically medium to full-bodied, with a firm Cabernet-driven structure and that unmistakable Médoc freshness. The 2006 shows savory, tertiary complexity and fine, integrated tannins; 2009 and 2010 are richer and more opulent, with great depth and length; 2015 and 2016 bring superb balance between ripe fruit and precision; and 2018 is still youthful, powerful and promising, with structured tannins and plenty of fruit. All share a classic dry finish with notes of cassis, pencil shavings and subtle oak spice. In terms of aging potential, the 2006 and 2009 are at or near peak but will hold beautifully, 2010 and 2015 still have many years ahead, while 2016 and 2018 will continue to gain complexity over the next decade or more.
Production
Château Potensac lies in the northern Médoc, on a mix of gravel, clay and limestone soils that are particularly well-suited to Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The gravel brings structure and finesse, while the clay-limestone subsoils help preserve freshness and elegance even in warmer years. Grapes are typically harvested parcel by parcel at optimal ripeness, often by hand, to ensure strict selection. In the cellar, Potensac is vinified in a traditional Bordeaux style: careful sorting, temperature-controlled fermentations, and macerations tailored to each vintage to extract fine tannins rather than excess power. The wines are then aged in French oak barrels (with a judicious use of new oak) to polish structure and add complexity, without overshadowing the character of the fruit and terroir. Across the vintages in this collection, you can taste how this consistent, classical approach highlights the nuance of each year.
Food & Serving
This collection is exceptionally versatile at the table. The more mature vintages (2006, 2009) are beautiful with roast lamb, braised veal, duck, game birds, mushroom dishes and aged hard cheeses. The younger, more structured wines (2010, 2015, 2016, 2018) pair wonderfully with entrecôte or côte de boeuf, grilled or roasted beef, slow-cooked short ribs, venison, and hearty stews, as well as truffle-infused dishes. Serve Château Potensac at around 16–18°C. The older bottles benefit from a gentle decant of about 30 minutes to remove sediment and let the bouquet open. The younger vintages, especially 2016 and 2018, can profit from 1–2 hours in a decanter to soften the tannins and fully express their aromatics.
Producer
Château Potensac is a highly respected estate in the Médoc and is owned by the same Delon family behind the illustrious Château Léoville Las Cases in Saint-Julien. Long considered one of the benchmark properties of its appellation, Potensac is often praised for delivering “classed growth” quality at a more accessible level. The estate has a history stretching back many generations, and under the Delon stewardship it has gained a reputation for consistency, precision and ageworthy, classical Bordeaux character. Frequently cited by critics as one of the overachievers of the northern Médoc, Château Potensac has earned its place in the cellars of enthusiasts who appreciate traditional Left Bank style, structure and longevity.
