Description

Château Pontet-Canet 2000 is a classic Pauillac from one of Bordeaux’s most celebrated vintages, offering power, structure and remarkable finesse. Classified as a 5ème Cru in the 1855 classification, this estate has long punched above its weight, and the 2000 vintage is widely regarded as one of the château’s benchmark wines. Blending Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc, it captures the essence of left-bank Bordeaux at a beautifully mature stage of its life.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2000 Pontet-Canet shows a deep garnet core with brick-red highlights at the rim, reflecting over two decades of graceful evolution. The nose is complex and inviting, with layers of blackcurrant, blackberry and plum entwined with cedar, cigar box, graphite and damp earth, alongside hints of leather, dried violets, tobacco leaf and a subtle sweet spice. On the palate, this is a structured yet supple Pauillac, with finely resolved tannins and a harmonious balance between ripe dark fruit and savory tertiary notes. Blackcurrant, dried cherry and mulberry are framed by nuances of pencil shavings, roasted coffee, licorice and forest floor. The finish is long, poised and mineral-driven, with lingering notes of cassis and cedar. While the 2000 vintage is now in a beautiful drinking window and showing mature complexity, well-stored bottles still have the structure to evolve further over the next 5–10 years, gaining additional nuance rather than primary fruit intensity.

Production
Pontet-Canet’s vineyards lie on the deep gravel soils of Pauillac, just across the road from the famed First Growths, with gravel ridges over a subsoil of clay and limestone that are ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2000 vintage benefited from a warm, dry growing season that produced concentrated, perfectly ripe grapes with excellent tannic structure. Harvesting was carried out parcel by parcel at optimal ripeness, with rigorous selection to ensure only the best fruit made it into the final blend. Traditional vinification in temperature-controlled vats allowed for a gentle, precise extraction, followed by aging in French oak barrels (a significant portion new), where the wine gained additional complexity, texture and integration before bottling.

Food & Serving
This mature Pauillac pairs beautifully with classic dishes such as roast lamb with garlic and rosemary, dry-aged ribeye, beef Wellington, or venison with a red wine reduction. It also works well with game birds, mushroom-based dishes, truffle risotto and well-aged hard cheeses like Comté or aged Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and fine structure. Decanting for 1–2 hours before serving is recommended for well-cellared bottles, both to allow the bouquet to fully open and to separate any sediment that has formed over time.

Producer
Château Pontet-Canet, located in the heart of Pauillac, traces its origins back to the early 18th century when it was founded by Jean-François de Pontet and later expanded into one of the key estates of the Médoc. Classified as a 5ème Cru in 1855, the château has since gained a reputation for producing wines that often rival higher-ranked neighbors in depth, elegance and longevity. Under the stewardship of the Tesseron family, Pontet-Canet has become a benchmark estate in Pauillac and a pioneer in the region’s move toward more sustainable, biodynamic farming (a transition that gathered pace shortly after the 2000 vintage). Known for its commitment to quality in both vineyard and cellar, the château consistently produces wines that are highly sought-after by collectors and enthusiasts around the world.
