Description

Réserve de la Comtesse 2022 is the refined second wine of the famed Pauillac estate Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande, offering a generous taste of grand cru classé pedigree at a more accessible level. In this sunny, concentrated vintage, it stands out as one of Bordeaux’s most successful second wines, marrying plush, expressive fruit with the château’s hallmark elegance. This cuvée distills the character of one of Pauillac’s most illustrious properties, with roots stretching back to the 19th century and a long history of producing wines known for both power and finesse.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Réserve de la Comtesse shows a deep, vibrant garnet-purple hue, hinting at its concentration and youthful energy. The nose is immediately seductive: sweet dark berries and blackcurrant mingle with notes of minty red berries, violets, warm embers, and a subtle graphite and pencil-shaving character that is quintessentially Pauillac. On the palate, this is medium to full-bodied, supple, and beautifully aromatic, with an almost exotic core of ripe black and blue fruits wrapped in silky, powdery tannins. Layers of cassis, black cherry, and wild strawberry are lifted by floral tones and a touch of cedar and spice, leading into a long, precise, and penetrating finish. Despite its generosity, the structure is finely woven, giving both immediate pleasure and the promise of development. Enjoyable in its youth after a short decant, it should evolve gracefully for 10–15 years, gaining complexity and softening its tannins with time in the cellar.

Production
Réserve de la Comtesse is sourced primarily from the younger vines and selected parcels of the historic Pichon Lalande estate in Pauillac, on the Left Bank of Bordeaux. The vineyard lies on classic Garonne gravel over a subsoil of clay and sand, a terroir that naturally favors Cabernet Sauvignon while giving Merlot a lush, supple expression. Grapes are harvested parcel by parcel, usually by hand, with strict sorting to ensure only the healthiest, optimally ripe berries are used. Vinification takes place in temperature-controlled vats, with careful extraction to preserve aromatic purity and fine tannin texture, followed by maturation in French oak barrels (a portion of which are new) to bring additional structure, spice, and polish without overwhelming the wine’s fresh, vibrant fruit.

Food & Serving
This Pauillac is a versatile partner for refined yet flavorful dishes. It shines alongside roasted or grilled lamb, ribeye or entrecôte, duck breast, and classic beef dishes such as bordelaise or steak with peppercorn sauce. It also pairs beautifully with game birds, mushroom-based dishes, and aged hard cheeses like Comté or mature cheddar. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatics and balance; a gentle decanting of 1–2 hours in its youth will soften the tannins and allow the wine’s minty, floral, and graphite notes to fully unfurl.

Producer
Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is one of Pauillac’s most revered estates, classified as a Second Growth (Deuxième Cru Classé) in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification. Long celebrated for producing some of the appellation’s most sensual and elegant wines, the property has often been described as a bridge between the power of Pauillac and the grace of neighboring Saint-Julien. Under modern stewardship and significant investment in vineyard care and cellar technology, Pichon Lalande has consolidated its reputation at the very top of Bordeaux. Réserve de la Comtesse, the estate’s second wine, has in recent decades risen to a level where, in great vintages such as 2022, it is regarded as one of the standout second wines of the Médoc, offering serious quality and a clear expression of this illustrious terroir.
