Description

Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande 1989 is a classic Pauillac with the kind of depth, perfume and silky structure that has made the estate one of Bordeaux’s most admired names. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot, it combines power with elegance in a way that feels unmistakably Grand Vin, and the 1989 vintage is widely regarded as one of the château’s great successes.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows a deep, dense garnet-purple color that still hints at its impressive concentration. The nose is beautifully evolved and layered, with smoky cassis, dark chocolate, toasted oak, cedar, tobacco, crushed flowers and a subtle incense-like perfume. On the palate it is full-bodied yet refined, with sweet black fruit at the core, supple tannins and remarkable finesse that gives the wine a velvety, almost seamless texture. This is a wine that has aged with grace, and at this stage it should be showing superb complexity rather than youthful force. While it can still offer plenty of life for further cellaring, its best years are likely now and over the near term, where its aromatic detail, balance and elegance can be fully enjoyed.

Production
The estate sits in a privileged southern Pauillac location on deep gravel soils close to the Gironde estuary, with Château Latour as its direct neighbour. These well-drained terroirs are ideally suited to Cabernet Sauvignon, while Merlot and Cabernet Franc add roundness and aromatic lift. Fruit is traditionally harvested by hand and vinified with care to preserve parcel character and balance, with oak ageing contributing structure, spice and longevity.

Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with dishes that match its depth and refinement, such as roast lamb, beef fillet, duck breast, venison, or truffle-accented mushroom dishes. Hard cheeses and classic French cuisine also work very well. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for 1–2 hours if the bottle is recently opened, especially if sediment is present.

Producer
Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande has a long and distinguished history dating back to the late 17th century, and it became a Second Growth in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification. Once part of a single estate founded in 1689, it was later divided between heirs, creating the Comtesse and Baron branches of Pichon Longueville. Under the stewardship of May-Eliane de Lencquesaing, the château rose to renewed prominence through major vineyard and cellar investment, and it remains one of Pauillac’s most celebrated estates, admired for its elegant, aromatic style and consistently excellent wines.
