Description
Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande 1988 is a classically styled Pauillac from one of Bordeaux’s most celebrated Second Growth estates. Known for combining power with elegance, this vintage reflects the refined, age-worthy character that has made the château a benchmark in the Médoc since its inclusion in the 1855 classification.
Tasting Notes
The wine shows a deep brick-red hue with clear signs of maturity. On the nose, it is layered and developed, offering blackcurrant, dried fruit, cedar, tobacco, leather, and a subtle mineral edge.
The palate is beautifully balanced, with ripe tannins, fresh acidity, and an elegant, long finish. Tertiary notes of forest floor and truffle are increasingly pronounced, adding complexity and depth. This wine is at peak maturity or slightly beyond its ideal drinking window, though well-stored bottles can still deliver remarkable harmony and nuance.
Production
Produced in Pauillac on Bordeaux’s Left Bank, the wine comes from gravel-rich terroir that naturally favors Cabernet Sauvignon, giving the blend structure, freshness, and precision. The 1988 vintage benefited from a warm, dry late summer, allowing the grapes to reach full phenolic ripeness with concentrated fruit and firm tannins. Vinification followed a traditional Bordeaux approach, preserving the wine’s classical backbone and aging potential.
Food & Serving
This mature Pauillac pairs wonderfully with roast lamb, beef tenderloin, duck breast, game birds, or hard, aged cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C and consider decanting for 30–60 minutes, depending on the bottle’s condition, to help the aromas open gently without losing its delicate older-vintage character.
Producer
Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is one of the flagship estates of Pauillac, with a long history rooted in Bordeaux’s aristocratic wine tradition. Classified as a Deuxième Cru in 1855, it has earned a reputation for producing wines of uncommon finesse, perfume, and longevity. The estate is widely admired for its ability to balance the structure of Pauillac with a more graceful, silky style than many of its peers.
