Description
Château Pichon-Longueville Baron 2016 is a superbly limited, château-direct release presented in a striking black gift box with three bottles—an impressive collector’s set from one of Pauillac’s most revered estates. Often described as a "super second," Pichon Baron delivers the depth, precision, and grand vin character that places it among Bordeaux’s elite.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2016 shows a deep garnet-purple hue, hinting at its concentration and pedigree. The bouquet is beautifully layered, opening with warm red and black currants, black plum preserves, truffle, tapenade, rose hip tea, sandalwood, Chinese five spice, and a subtle mineral note reminiscent of iron ore.
On the palate, it is medium- to full-bodied with a firm, finely carved structure and a core of mineral-driven black fruit. Exotic spice, herbal nuances, and polished tannins lead to a very long finish. While already compelling, this is a wine with excellent aging potential and will continue to evolve gracefully for many years, gaining further complexity and nuance.
Production
Pichon Baron’s vineyards in Pauillac benefit from classic Left Bank terroir, with gravel-rich soils that promote excellent drainage and help Cabernet Sauvignon achieve full ripeness and aromatic precision. The estate works with meticulous attention to each parcel, adapting vineyard management to the conditions of each vintage, and all harvesting is done by hand with careful sorting by plot, vine age, and grape variety. In the cellar, the wine undergoes a controlled maceration and fermentation, followed by malolactic fermentation and élevage in barrel, with strict selection reserved for the grand vin. The result is a blend shaped by precision, parcel-by-parcel expression, and rigorous tasting.
Food & Serving
This is an ideal match for classic Bordeaux fare such as entrecôte, roasted lamb, beef tenderloin, duck breast, or game with forest mushrooms and truffle accents. It also pairs beautifully with mature hard cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C, and decant for at least 2 hours if drinking now to allow the wine to fully open and show its depth.
Producer
Founded in 1689 and later divided after Baron Joseph de Pichon Longueville’s death in 1850, Château Pichon Longueville Baron has a long and distinguished history in Pauillac. Classified as a Second Growth in 1855, the estate experienced a major renaissance in the 1980s after being acquired by AXA, with Jean-Michel Cazes leading significant investments in vineyards, cellar facilities, and winemaking precision. Today, Pichon Baron is regarded as one of Bordeaux’s benchmark estates, celebrated for producing powerful, refined wines of remarkable consistency and depth.
