Description
Château Pichon-Longueville Baron 2015 is a beautifully presented, highly limited release from one of Pauillac’s most respected estates, offered here in an exclusive black gift box with six bottles. Often described as a true “super second,” it combines the depth and structure of a great Left Bank Bordeaux with remarkable polish and precision. Its lineage dates back to 1689, and the estate’s long history, including its 1855 Second Growth classification, gives this vintage a real sense of prestige and heritage.
Tasting Notes
Medium to deep garnet-purple in colour, the wine opens with an alluring bouquet of chocolate-covered cherries, crushed red currants, mulberries, baking spices, potpourri, bay leaves and a subtle leafy note. The nose is expressive and perfumed, yet firmly grounded in classic Pauillac character.
On the palate, it is medium-bodied, elegant and refreshingly vibrant, with concentrated red fruit, very fine but firmly etched tannins, and a long, persistent finish. The 2015 vintage shows impressive intensity and balance, and the wine has the structure and freshness to age gracefully for 30 years or more, developing further complexity with time in bottle.
Production
The grapes come from carefully tended Pauillac vineyards where the team adjusts work in the vines according to each season’s weather conditions, with meticulous attention to detail throughout the growing cycle. Harvesting is done entirely by hand, with clusters selected by variety, vine age and parcel to ensure only the best fruit reaches the winery. Vinification includes a controlled maceration and fermentation period of around three to four weeks, followed by malolactic fermentation and ageing in barrel in the cellar’s subdued light. For the grand vin, only the finest lots are chosen after extensive blending trials involving more than 40 wines, resulting in a final cuvée that reflects both the vintage and the estate’s signature precision.
Food & Serving
This is a superb match for classic rich dishes such as beef tenderloin, ribeye, lamb rack, duck breast, venison or truffle-infused dishes, as well as mature hard cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C and, while the wine is already beautifully composed, decanting for about 1–2 hours is recommended if drinking young to allow the aromatics and structure to open fully.
Producer
Château Pichon Longueville Baron traces its roots to 1689 and became a Second Growth in the historic 1855 Bordeaux Classification. After a period of relative decline, the estate was revitalised in the 1980s following its acquisition by AXA, with major investment in the vineyards, winery and selection process under Jean-Michel Cazes. Today it is one of Pauillac’s most admired estates, known for its detail-driven approach, outstanding consistency and wines that regularly rank among the finest in Bordeaux.
