Description

Château Pédesclaux Pauillac 2020 is a polished, modern expression of classic Pauillac, crafted from a carefully judged blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Classified as a Fifth Growth in the historic 1855 classification, this wine has seen a remarkable qualitative renaissance in recent years and the 2020 vintage captures that new-found precision and finesse. Expect a structured, cellar‑worthy Médoc that still offers enough charm and purity of fruit to enjoy in its youth with proper aeration.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Château Pédesclaux shows a deep, vibrant ruby-purple hue with an almost opaque core, hinting at both concentration and youth. The nose opens with pure blackcurrant and ripe blackberry, followed by graphite, cedarwood, and cigar box, all wrapped in notes of violets, crushed stones, and a touch of dark chocolate and baking spice from well-integrated oak. On the palate, this Pauillac is medium to full-bodied, with a beautiful balance between dense, ripe fruit and a cool, linear freshness. Layers of cassis, black cherry and plum are supported by fine-grained, persistent tannins and a lively acidity that keeps the wine precise and focused. Subtle notes of pencil lead, tobacco leaf, and cocoa emerge on the long, mineral-driven finish. Still youthful and tightly knit, the 2020 has the structure to age gracefully for 15–25 years, gaining complexity and tertiary nuance with time in bottle.

Production
Château Pédesclaux’s vineyards lie on classic Pauillac terroir: deep gravelly soils over limestone and clay that provide excellent drainage and encourage the Cabernet Sauvignon to ripen slowly and evenly, concentrating flavor while preserving freshness. The grapes are harvested by hand, with careful sorting in the vineyard and at the winery to ensure only perfectly ripe berries make it into the final blend. Vinification typically takes place in temperature-controlled vats (a mix of stainless steel and concrete), with parcel-by-parcel fermentation to preserve the character of each plot. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels, a significant proportion of which are new, for around 16–18 months, allowing the tannins to refine and the aromatic complexity to deepen without overwhelming the purity of fruit.

Food & Serving
Château Pédesclaux Pauillac 2020 is a natural partner for classic, richly flavored dishes—think roast or grilled lamb, herb-crusted rack of lamb, dry-aged ribeye steak, duck breast, or slow-braised beef and veal. It also pairs beautifully with game birds, mushroom-based dishes, and aged hard cheeses such as Comté or mature Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic detail and structural elegance. In its youth, decant for 1.5–2 hours to soften the tannins and allow the bouquet to open; as the wine matures, a shorter decant of 30–45 minutes is usually sufficient, mainly to remove any sediment.

Producer
Château Pédesclaux, located in the heart of Pauillac in Bordeaux, was classified as a Cinquième Cru (Fifth Growth) in the 1855 classification of the Médoc, cementing its historical importance in the region. After periods of relative quiet, the estate entered a new era when it was acquired by the Lorenzetti family in 2009, who invested heavily in vineyard restructuring, modernizing the cellar, and elevating quality. With holdings on prime gravelly parcels neighboring some of Pauillac’s most illustrious estates, Pédesclaux has rapidly gained recognition for producing wines that combine classical Pauillac structure with contemporary precision and elegance. Recent vintages, including 2020, have drawn critical acclaim and helped reestablish Château Pédesclaux as one of the rising stars of the appellation.
