In the glass, the 2020 Château Pédesclaux shows a deep, vibrant ruby-purple hue with an almost opaque core, hinting at both concentration and youth. The nose opens with pure blackcurrant and ripe blackberry, followed by graphite, cedarwood, and cigar box, all wrapped in notes of violets, crushed stones, and a touch of dark chocolate and baking spice from well-integrated oak. On the palate, this Pauillac is medium to full-bodied, with a beautiful balance between dense, ripe fruit and a cool, linear freshness. Production
Château Pédesclaux’s vineyards lie on classic Pauillac terroir: deep gravelly soils over limestone and clay that provide excellent drainage and encourage the Cabernet Sauvignon to ripen slowly and evenly, concentrating flavor while preserving freshness. The grapes are harvested by hand, with careful sorting in the vineyard and at the winery to ensure only perfectly ripe berries make it into the final blend. Vinification typically takes place in temperature-controlled vats (a mix of stainless steel and concrete), with parcel-by-parcel fermentation to preserve the character of each plot. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels, a significant proportion of which are new, for around 16–18 months, allowing the tannins to refine and the aromatic complexity to deepen without overwhelming the purity of fruit.
