Description

Château Pape-Clément is one of the historic names of Pessac-Léognan, with roots dating back to 1300 and a legacy tied to Pope Clement V. The 2020 vintage reflects the estate’s distinctive blend of tradition and modern precision, shaped by careful vineyard selection and élevage in French oak.

Tasting Notes
A deep, polished red with impressive concentration and classic Bordeaux structure. On the nose, expect layers of ripe dark berries, blackcurrant, cedar, graphite, and warm spice, supported by a subtle toasted-oak character. On the palate, the wine is rich and layered, with ripe fruit, firm yet refined tannins, and a long, elegant finish. Its balance and structure suggest very good aging potential, rewarding cellaring over the coming years with even greater depth and complexity.

Production
The estate lies on the outskirts of Pessac and spans 32 hectares of prized terroir in Bordeaux. Grapes are fermented in wooden vats, followed by 30 to 40 days of low-temperature skin maceration; the wine is then gravity-fed into French oak barrels for malolactic fermentation and 18 months of maturation. Bernard Magrez’s arrival in 1985 brought stricter grape selection, stainless-steel tank use, and a higher proportion of new oak, helping elevate the estate’s precision and style.

Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with roast lamb, beef tenderloin, duck, game dishes, and rich mushroom-based preparations. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decant for 1–2 hours if drinking young to allow the aromas and tannins to open fully.

Producer
Château Pape-Clément was founded in 1300 by Bernard de Groth, later Pope Clement V, making it one of Bordeaux’s oldest vineyards. Acquired by the Montagne family in 1939, the estate is now led by Léo Montagne and has earned a strong reputation in Pessac-Léognan for combining heritage, meticulous viticulture, and modern winemaking. Bernard Magrez’s influence since 1985 has played an important role in refining the estate’s quality and international standing.
