Description
Château Palmer Historical XIXth Century Wine LOT 20.21 is a rare, modern re‑creation of a forgotten 19th‑century Bordeaux tradition, where top châteaux would quietly ‘hermitage’ their clarets with a touch of Rhône Syrah. In this 2021 release, Palmer marries its iconic Margaux elegance with a discreet yet powerful component from a secret Northern Rhône estate, creating a wine that sits thrillingly between classic Bordeaux and fine Hermitage. Produced in a tiny quantity of just 3,000 bottles and individually presented in wooden cases, this is both a collector’s piece and a singular drinking experience. The blend of 49% Merlot, 39% Cabernet Sauvignon and 12% Syrah sets it apart from virtually any other classified growth in Bordeaux today. The Syrah deepens colour, adds spice and structure, and echoes the great 1800s clarets that inspired this cuvée. By reviving this historical practice, Château Palmer doesn’t just pay homage to the past; it reimagines what Bordeaux can be in the 21st century.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, LOT 20.21 is deeply coloured, an intense, opaque ruby with violet reflections hinting at its youth and Syrah component. Swirled in the glass, it clings with slow, fine legs, suggesting both concentration and ripe, polished tannins.
The nose is layered and enticing: classic Margaux notes of blackcurrant, plum and wild blackberry are interwoven with violets, graphite, cedar and a subtle cigar-box nuance. The Northern Rhône influence brings in black pepper, dark cherry, a touch of cured meat and a faint, smoky-mineral edge. As it opens, hints of cocoa, licorice, dried herbs and a refined floral perfume emerge, becoming more complex with air.
On the palate, the wine is full-bodied yet superbly poised, combining Palmer’s trademark silkiness with a firmer, more vertical backbone. Merlot provides a plush, dark-fruited core; Cabernet Sauvignon lends drive, freshness and structure; Syrah adds a spicy, sinewy dimension and extra depth on the mid-palate. Expect dense black and blue fruits—cassis, black cherry, mulberry—wrapped in fine-grained tannins, with notes of cracked pepper, tapenade, violets and subtle smoked tea on the long, savoury finish. The acidity is vibrant but integrated, giving the wine both energy and precision.
Aging potential is significant: while it can be approached in its first decade for its exuberant fruit and aromatic fireworks, LOT 20.21 is built to evolve gracefully for 15–25 years or more in a good cellar. Over time, the primary fruit will give way to more truffle, forest floor, leather and gamey nuances, with the Syrah element becoming ever more intriguingly woven into the Margaux tapestry.
Production
Château Palmer sits on the gravels of Margaux, a patchwork of deep Günzian gravel, sand and clay resting above the Gironde estuary. This well‑drained terroir naturally limits yields and forces the vines to dig deep, producing small, intensely flavoured berries that give both finesse and power. The estate has long embraced a sustainable, increasingly biodynamic approach, with meticulous work in the vineyards to express the character of each parcel.
For this Historical XIXth Century Wine, the Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness from Palmer’s own parcels, sorted berry by berry to ensure perfect quality. Vinification follows the château’s refined Bordeaux methods: fermentation in temperature‑controlled vats, gentle extraction to respect fruit purity and tannin finesse, and aging in carefully selected French oak barrels. The Syrah, sourced from a top Northern Rhône domaine whose identity remains deliberately undisclosed, is vinified and raised separately before a precise final blending. The result is a seamless integration of two great terroirs, echoing the 19th‑century practice of ‘hermitaging’ while remaining unmistakably Palmer in its elegance and refinement.
Food & Serving
This cuvée’s combination of Bordeaux structure and Rhône spice makes it a highly versatile partner at the table. It shines with classic dishes such as roast lamb with rosemary, entrecôte steak with jus, venison or game birds, and slow‑braised beef or veal cheeks. The Syrah component also pairs beautifully with richer, more savory preparations—think duck breast with a red wine reduction, chargrilled ribeye, short ribs, or dishes seasoned with black pepper, thyme and wild mushrooms. Hard and semi-hard cheeses such as aged Comté, Tomme de Savoie or mature cheddar make for excellent companions.
Serve at 16–18°C (about 60–64°F) to showcase both aromatics and structure. In its youth, decanting for 1.5–3 hours is advisable to soften the tannins and allow the layered bouquet to unfurl fully. As the wine gains bottle age, a gentler 45–60 minute decant—primarily to separate any sediment—will be sufficient, preserving the more delicate tertiary nuances that develop with time.
Producer
Château Palmer, classified as a 3ème Cru Classé in the historic 1855 Médoc classification, has long been regarded as one of the great overachievers of Bordeaux, often rivaling or surpassing higher‑ranked estates in quality and desirability. The estate traces its modern history to the early 19th century, when English General Charles Palmer, returning from the Peninsular War in 1814 after serving under Wellington against Napoleon, acquired the former Domaine de Gascq and gave it his name. Over time, Palmer’s wines gained a reputation for their sensual texture, aromatic complexity and Margaux finesse.
In 1938, the Sichel family, together with a group of négociant partners, purchased the property and began a long process of renewal and refinement. Today, Château Palmer is recognized as a benchmark of the Margaux appellation, celebrated for its commitment to meticulous vineyard work, low yields and increasingly biodynamic farming practices. Wines like the Historical XIXth Century cuvée highlight the estate’s willingness to draw on history while innovating within Bordeaux’s traditions, reinforcing Palmer’s status as one of the region’s most forward‑thinking and sought‑after producers.
