Description

Château Palmer Historical XIXth Century Wine LOT 20.19 revives a nearly forgotten 19th‑century Bordeaux tradition with a distinctly modern precision. Inspired by the era when top châteaux discreetly ‘hermitaged’ their clarets with a touch of Rhône Syrah, this 2019 marries the silkiness of Margaux with the depth and spice of the northern Côtes du Rhône. Produced in tiny quantities and released in May 2022, it stands as one of the most original and sought‑after wines in the Palmer portfolio.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Historical XIXth Century Wine shows a deep, opaque garnet core with a vibrant purple rim, signaling both concentration and youth. The nose is evocative and layered: ripe blackcurrant and dark plum from the Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon weave with Syrah’s signature notes of black pepper, violets, graphite, and a hint of smoked meat. Nuances of cedar, sandalwood, vanilla bean, and cocoa come from the 22 months in new French oak, framed by subtle hints of licorice, dried herbs, and warm gravel. On the palate, this wine is full‑bodied yet impeccably balanced, with Palmer’s hallmark finesse underpinning a more muscular, Rhône‑tinged profile. The Merlot (47%) lends plush, dark fruit and mid‑palate richness, while the Cabernet Sauvignon (44%) contributes structure, freshness, and a long, mineral‑driven finish. The 9% Syrah adds a savory edge, fine-grained tannins, and a spicy energy that lifts the whole. Expect waves of cassis, blackberry, and damson, layered with black olive tapenade, cracked pepper, and a touch of smoked tea. The tannins are polished but firm, suggesting excellent aging potential; this 2019 should evolve beautifully over 15–25 years, gaining complexity, truffle and tobacco notes, and an even more seamless integration of fruit and oak.

Production
Château Palmer lies in the heart of Margaux in Bordeaux, on classic deep gravel soils over sand and clay that naturally favor Cabernet and Merlot of great aromatic finesse. Farmed with a strong commitment to organic and biodynamic principles, Palmer’s vineyards yield low but intensely flavored fruit. For this Historical XIXth Century cuvée, the Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon are hand‑harvested in small crates, sorted parcel by parcel, and vinified separately in temperature‑controlled vats to preserve purity and precision. The Syrah component comes from a top site in the northern Côtes du Rhône, echoing the 19th‑century practice of blending in a portion of Hermitage. After fermentation, the components are matured together for 22 months in new French oak barrels, allowing the varieties and origins to knit into a singular, seamless wine before bottling. Only about 5,000 bottles were produced, each individually boxed in wood.

Food & Serving
This is a contemplative, gastronomic red that shines alongside richly flavored dishes. Think roasted or grilled lamb with herbs, beef ribeye, venison or other game birds, braised short ribs, or slow‑cooked beef daube. It also works beautifully with dishes that echo its Rhône elements: duck with black olives, lamb with tapenade, or mushroom and truffle preparations. Mature hard cheeses such as Comté, aged Gouda, or well‑aged cheddar are excellent partners. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F); in its youth, decant for 1.5–2 hours to soften the tannins and fully express the aromatic complexity. As it matures, a gentle 45–60 minute decant will be sufficient to open the bouquet.

Producer
Château Palmer, located in Margaux on Bordeaux’s Left Bank, is one of the most revered estates of the region, officially classified as a Third Growth in 1855 but often regarded by collectors as a ‘super second’ for its quality and consistency. Over the past decades, Palmer has become a benchmark for sensual, perfumed Bordeaux, pioneering lower yields, precise vineyard management, and, more recently, organic and biodynamic farming at the highest level. The Historical XIXth Century Wine project reflects the estate’s willingness to blend tradition and innovation: revisiting an old Bordelais custom while applying today’s meticulous standards. With its limited production and distinctive concept, this cuvée has become a cult bottling within the Palmer range and a reference point for those interested in the historical styles of great claret.
