Description

Alter Ego de Château Palmer 2001 is the second wine of one of Margaux’s most revered estates, offering a remarkable glimpse into Palmer’s grand style at a more approachable level. Made from younger vines and aged with a lighter touch of oak, it still carries the depth, structure, and pedigree that have made Château Palmer one of Bordeaux’s most admired names.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it typically shows a deep ruby color with garnet highlights beginning to emerge with age. The bouquet is expressive and layered, with dark berries, plum, cedar, violet, and subtle earthy notes, supported by hints of spice, tobacco, and fine oak. On the palate, it is full-bodied and polished, with ripe black fruit, supple tannins, and a poised balance between concentration and freshness. Despite being the estate’s second wine, it has real presence and a long finish, and the 2001 vintage should now be drinking beautifully while still retaining enough structure to evolve further over the coming years.

Production
Alter Ego is crafted from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot sourced from younger vines at Château Palmer in Margaux, Bordeaux. The wine is made with a gentler use of new oak than the Grand Vin, allowing the fruit and terroir to remain more immediate while still reflecting the estate’s meticulous approach. Château Palmer has embraced biodynamic viticulture, and the property’s focus on biodiversity and precision in the vineyard underpins the quality and character of every bottling.

Food & Serving
This is a superb partner for roasted lamb, beef tenderloin, duck breast, game birds, or mushroom-based dishes with rich, earthy flavors. Serve at 16–18°C and decant for 1–2 hours if opening now, especially if you want the wine to show its aromatic complexity and silky texture at its best.

Producer
Château Palmer is one of the flagship estates of Margaux, with a reputation for producing some of Bordeaux’s most distinctive and age-worthy wines. The estate’s modern rise has been shaped by exacting viticulture, biodynamic conversion, and the leadership of Thomas Duroux, who has helped elevate Palmer to even greater heights. Widely regarded as one of the few properties in Margaux capable of standing shoulder to shoulder with Château Margaux, it has earned an enviable place among Bordeaux’s elite.
