Description
Chateau Nenin 2019 Pomerol is a refined Right Bank Bordeaux that marries the plush richness of Merlot with the aromatic lift and structure of Cabernet Franc. This vintage captures the hallmark elegance of Pomerol: supple, velvety fruit wrapped in fine, polished tannins. Long regarded as one of the appellation’s most reliable estates, Chateau Nenin continues its modern renaissance with a 2019 that is both approachable in youth and built for graceful aging.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Chateau Nenin shows a deep, vibrant ruby-purple hue, hinting at both concentration and freshness. The nose opens with ripe black cherry, plum, and blackberry compote, followed by layers of violets, graphite, and subtle baking spice. With a bit of air, notes of cocoa nibs, cedar, and a touch of tobacco emerge, adding complexity without overpowering the fruit.
On the palate, this is medium to full-bodied with a silky yet assertive structure. Juicy dark fruits—black cherry, damson plum, and cassis—are framed by fine-grained tannins and a lively, well-integrated acidity. Hints of mocha, licorice, and pencil shavings underline the wine’s Bordeaux pedigree, while the finish is long, precise, and gently mineral. The 2019 has the balance to drink well after a short aeration now, but it will reward patience; optimal drinking is likely from 2025 and it should evolve beautifully for at least 15–20 years in a good cellar.
Production
Chateau Nenin’s vineyards lie on the plateau and gentle slopes of Pomerol, rooted in a mix of gravel, clay, and sand that naturally favors Merlot while giving Cabernet Franc a bright, aromatic profile. The estate practices meticulous vineyard management with careful canopy work and strict green harvesting to ensure even ripening. Grapes are picked parcel by parcel at optimal maturity, typically by hand, to preserve fruit integrity. In the cellar, fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled vats, with gentle extraction to emphasize finesse over power. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels—typically a proportion new and the remainder second-fill—for around 16–18 months, allowing tannins to soften and the aromatic complexity to develop without overwhelming the purity of the fruit.
Food & Serving
Chateau Nenin 2019 is a versatile Pomerol that shines alongside classic dishes such as roast lamb, beef tenderloin, duck breast, or veal in rich jus. It also pairs beautifully with mushroom-based dishes, truffle risotto, and hard cheeses like Comté or aged Gouda, where its supple texture and dark fruit can really stand out. Serve at 16–18°C (about 60–64°F) to highlight its freshness and aromatic detail. For current drinking, decant for 1–2 hours to open up the nose and smooth the tannins; as it ages, a shorter decant of about 30–45 minutes will typically be sufficient.
Producer
Chateau Nenin is one of Pomerol’s historic properties, with roots reaching back to the 19th century. The estate gained renewed prominence when it was acquired by the Delon family—owners of the famed Chateau Léoville Las Cases in Saint-Julien—who invested heavily in the vineyards and cellar. Under their stewardship, Nenin has evolved into a benchmark for a more structured, ageworthy style of Pomerol that still retains the appellation’s signature plushness. Today, Chateau Nenin is regarded as a reference estate on the Right Bank, consistently producing wines that offer both immediate charm and serious long-term potential.
