Description
Château Mouton Rothschild is one of Bordeaux’s most legendary names, celebrated for producing powerful, age-worthy wines with unmistakable aristocratic character. The 2002 vintage comes from the estate’s prized Pauillac vineyards and carries the prestige of a First Growth, a status the château regained in 1973 after a long and remarkable campaign.
Tasting Notes
Dense and deep in colour, with a vivid purple core and classic dark-fruit concentration. The nose opens with cassis, blackcurrant, graphite and cedar, layered with tobacco, spice and a subtle earthy reserve. On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied, firmly structured and tannic, with impressive depth, a muscular core and a long, serious finish that rewards patience. This is a wine built for cellaring and should continue to evolve beautifully over many years, gaining complexity and polish with time.
Production
The estate spans around 90 hectares in Pauillac on the Médoc peninsula, where gravelly soils over sand and clay provide ideal drainage and help the vines develop depth and precision. The vineyards are densely planted, with Cabernet Sauvignon as the dominant variety, supported by Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot; the final blend varies by vintage, depending on the character of the harvest. Grapes are carefully tended and harvested with meticulous selection, and vinification is carried out with the estate’s highly experienced team to preserve concentration, balance and the signature Mouton style.
Food & Serving
This wine pairs best with richly flavoured dishes such as roast lamb, beef tenderloin, duck breast, venison or truffle-based cuisine. It is also excellent with mature hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decanting is recommended, especially if opening now, to allow the wine to gradually reveal its full aromatic range and soften its structure.
Producer
Château Mouton Rothschild was acquired by Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild in 1853, and under Baron Philippe de Rothschild it became one of the most famous estates in the world. He pioneered château bottling, introduced the now-iconic artist labels and helped elevate the estate from Second Growth to Premier Cru Classé in 1973. Today, the château remains a benchmark for Pauillac and one of the most admired names in fine wine, known for craftsmanship, prestige and consistency at the very highest level.
