Description

Chateau Moulin de la Rose Saint Julien 2021 is a classic left-bank Bordeaux that captures the elegance and structure Saint-Julien is so loved for. Crafted from 65% Cabernet Sauvignon and 35% Merlot, it offers a generous, fruit-driven profile wrapped in refined tannins and vibrant freshness. Sourced from a tiny 5.15-hectare estate surrounded by famed Grands Crus Classés, this cuvée delivers an authentic, site-driven expression of one of Bordeaux’s most prestigious appellations.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Moulin de la Rose shows a deep ruby colour with youthful purple reflections, hinting at both concentration and liveliness. The nose is expressive and layered: ripe blackberry and blueberry mingle with notes of blackcurrant, violet and liquorice, underscored by a subtle spice and a whisper of graphite that is very typical of Saint-Julien. On the palate, the wine is generous yet poised, with Cabernet Sauvignon providing structure, freshness and a lightly mineral edge, while Merlot adds a creamy, supple core of dark fruit. Fine-grained, noble tannins feel velvety rather than austere, carrying flavours of black berries, plum skin, violets and sweet spice through a long, savoury finish. There is plenty of energy and lift, suggesting this 2021 will drink beautifully from the mid-term onwards, with an aging potential of around 8–12 years from vintage in good cellaring conditions.

Production
The vineyards of Chateau Moulin de la Rose lie in the heart of Saint-Julien, planted on classic Garonne gravel – the well-draining, heat-retentive soils that have made the Médoc’s Cabernet Sauvignon so distinctive. The 5.15-hectare estate is planted with vines averaging 35 years of age, whose naturally reduced yields help to concentrate flavour and complexity in the berries. Harvesting is carried out parcel by parcel at optimal ripeness, followed by careful sorting to ensure only the healthiest fruit is used. Vinification follows traditional left-bank Bordeaux methods: temperature-controlled fermentation to preserve fruit purity, gentle extraction to respect tannin finesse, and maturation in French oak barrels (often including a proportion of new oak) to add subtle spice and polish while allowing the character of the Saint-Julien terroir to shine.

Food & Serving
This Saint-Julien is a natural partner for classic dishes such as roast lamb with herbs, entrecôte or ribeye steak, duck breast, or veal chops with a red wine jus. It also pairs beautifully with game birds, mushroom-based dishes, and hard cheeses like Comté or aged Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (about 60–64°F) for optimal expression. In its youth, a gentle decant of 45–60 minutes helps the bouquet unfurl and softens the tannins; as it gains a few years in bottle, a shorter aeration will be sufficient to reveal its full complexity.

Producer
Chateau Moulin de la Rose takes its name from an 18th-century mill that once stood where the estate now lies, a reminder of the deep rural history of Saint-Julien. Nestled among some of the appellation’s most illustrious Grands Crus Classés, this small, family-sized property has carved out a reputation for producing wines that punch above their weight, offering a particularly pure reading of the Saint-Julien style: structured yet refined, aromatic yet always balanced. With its old vines rooted in prime Garonne gravel and its dedication to traditional Médoc craftsmanship, Moulin de la Rose has become a discreet insider’s address for those seeking classic left-bank Bordeaux character without the grand château price tag.
