Description

Château Margaux 1985 is a beautifully composed Bordeaux that captures everything the estate is celebrated for: elegance, perfume, and precision. In a warm and even vintage, the wine came to embody the château’s signature style under Corinne Mentzelopoulos and Paul Pontallier—less about sheer power, more about aristocratic finesse. A historic First Growth from one of the most revered names in Bordeaux, it remains a collector’s wine with true pedigree.

Tasting Notes
The wine shows a handsome brick-red hue with a translucent rim, reflecting graceful maturity while still retaining vitality. On the nose, it is unmistakably Margaux: violets, dried rose petals, blackcurrant, cedar, graphite, and a subtle animal nuance that adds complexity and depth. The palate is silken and almost weightless in texture, yet firmly structured beneath the surface. Fruit, acidity, and tannin are in excellent harmony, giving the wine a poised, layered feel rather than overt richness. At this stage it is beautifully mature and at or near its peak, though it can continue to evolve with additional tertiary nuances for many years to come.

Production
The 1985 vintage in Bordeaux benefited from a remarkably steady, warm growing season with few extremes, allowing the grapes to ripen evenly and fully. Château Margaux’s gravelly terroir in the Médoc is ideally suited to Cabernet Sauvignon, which forms the backbone of the blend, supported by Merlot and Cabernet Franc for depth and aromatic finesse. Traditional vinification at the estate emphasizes precision and balance, preserving the wine’s lifted perfume and refined tannic frame.

Food & Serving
This is a wine for classic, elegant pairings such as roast lamb, beef Wellington, duck breast, game birds, or truffle-inflected dishes. Mature hard cheeses can also work well. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decant gently if needed; with an older bottle like this, brief aeration is preferable to preserve its delicate aromatics.

Producer
Château Margaux is one of Bordeaux’s legendary First Growths and among the most iconic wine estates in the world. The property has long been associated with refinement and longevity, but it regained particular brilliance in the 1980s under Corinne Mentzelopoulos’ ownership, with Paul Pontallier bringing exceptional technical consistency and precision. The estate’s achievements have made it a benchmark for Cabernet-based Bordeaux of elegance and class.
