Château Lynch-Bages 2016

Château Lynch-Bages 2016 is a powerful, classically styled Pauillac that combines the depth and structure of Cabernet Sauvignon with the supple richness of Merlot. From one of the most dependable estates on the Left Bank, this vintage stands out for its concentration, freshness, and impressive ageing potential. It is a wine that reflects both the pedigree of the 1855 classification and the modern precision that has made Lynch-Bages a benchmark in Bordeaux.

Tasting Notes
Deep and near-opaque in the glass, the 2016 shows the kind of density that immediately signals serious intent. The nose opens slowly, revealing black fruit, floral accents, and a subtle crushed-stone nuance, all framed by fine oak and a very fresh, lifted character. On the palate, it is concentrated, multi-layered, and firmly structured, but the tannins are polished and well integrated rather than aggressive. There is superb tension between the ripe blackberry and cassis fruit, the bright acidity, and the wine’s firm mineral backbone. This is a wine built for the long haul and should continue to develop beautifully for well over a decade, with the potential to age for several decades in a great cellar.

Production
The grapes come from the Bages plateau just southwest of Pauillac, where Lynch-Bages farms around 100 hectares divided into many small parcels, allowing for careful vineyard management and expression of terroir. The soils and exposure are ideally suited to Cabernet Sauvignon, which dominates the blend, while Merlot adds roundness and Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot contribute complexity and structure. Harvest is done by hand, followed by sorting and fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks, with maturation for 15 to 18 months in up to 75% new oak depending on the vintage.

Food & Serving
This is a classic partner for rich, flavourful dishes such as ribeye steak, roast lamb, beef Wellington, braised short ribs, or game with earthy sauces. It also works beautifully with mature hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for at least 1–2 hours when young to allow the wine to open and soften its structure.

Château Lynch-Bages has been owned by the Cazes family since 1939, when Jean-Charles Cazes rescued the estate and began restoring it to the level expected of a Fifth Growth in the 1855 Classification. Today it remains one of the most respected names in Pauillac, known for producing wines of reliability, power, and clear regional identity. Alongside its flagship wine, the estate also produces Echo de Lynch-Bages, Pauillac de Lynch-Bages, and a white wine under Blanc de Lynch-Bages.
