Description

Château Léoville Poyferré 1990 Magnum is a mature Saint-Julien that combines power, warmth, and plenty of old-school charm. Sourced from one of Bordeaux’s most respected classified growth estates, this vintage has become a favorite among collectors for its generous character and classic Left Bank pedigree.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep plum-garnet color with the kind of mature depth that signals a wine in full stride. The nose is immediately expressive, opening with smoke, charcoal, crème de cassis, and floral notes, then evolving toward hints of mint and dark melted chocolate with a little air. The palate is medium-full, supple, and impressively layered, with soft, yielding tannins and a broad, fleshy texture. It has a sensual, almost Pomerol-like richness, wrapped in ripe cassis fruit and a touch of rustic warmth from the generous 1990 vintage. While it may not have the finesse of newer releases, it more than makes up for it with character and immediate drinking pleasure.

Production
This is a classic Bordeaux blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Petit Verdot, grown in the gravelly Saint-Julien terroir that has long given Léoville Poyferré its structure and depth. The vintage’s warm growing season contributed to the wine’s ripe, expressive profile, and careful vinification preserved both its richness and its distinctive mature personality.

Food & Serving
Best served with roast lamb, beef tenderloin, game, or duck with a rich sauce, as well as aged hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decant gently if needed to remove sediment; a short decant is usually enough for a wine of this age.

Producer
Château Léoville Poyferré is one of Saint-Julien’s most admired classified estates, with a history rooted in the legendary Léoville property that was once among the great estates of pre-revolutionary Bordeaux. Over time, it has built a strong reputation for producing wines of depth, concentration, and elegance, and today it is widely regarded as one of the standout names in the Médoc.
