Description
Château Léoville Las Cases Collection Miroir – Millésimes Historiques is an exceptionally rare presentation case bringing together six of the estate’s most legendary vintages: 1982, 1990, 1996, 2000, 2005 and 2009. Conceived as one half of an exclusive two-case “mirror” set, this Historical Vintages collection showcases the long-term brilliance and age-worthiness of one of Bordeaux’s greatest estates. For collectors, it represents a unique opportunity to experience the evolution of Léoville Las Cases across nearly three decades of benchmark years.
Tasting Notes
Each bottle in the Millésimes Historiques collection offers a different snapshot of Léoville Las Cases’ character at its finest, from mature, fully evolved wines to still-youthful grands crus with decades ahead of them. In the glass, expect the deep garnet to opaque ruby hues typical of top Left Bank Bordeaux, with the older vintages (such as 1982 and 1990) showing a brick-tinged rim and the younger years (2005, 2009) retaining vibrant, inky concentration.
The nose across these vintages is classic Saint-Julien: cassis, blackcurrant and black cherry layered with graphite, cedar, cigar box and fine tobacco, evolving toward truffle, leather and dried flowers in the older wines. On the palate, Léoville Las Cases is known for its precision and structure—dense yet refined tannins, a powerful core of dark fruit, and remarkable freshness that carries the flavors long on the finish. The 1982 and 1990 show velvety textures and complex tertiary notes, while 1996 and 2000 deliver tension and mineral drive, and 2005 and 2009 combine richness, concentration and polish. Properly cellared, the younger bottles in this case still have significant aging potential, while the older vintages are at or near their peak, offering sublime, fully mature claret.
Production
Château Léoville Las Cases draws its identity from some of the finest terroir in Saint-Julien, with vineyards that closely border those of Château Latour in Pauillac. Deep gravel soils over clay and sand provide excellent drainage and help produce small, concentrated berries dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, supported by Merlot and Cabernet Franc in a classic Left Bank blend. Harvesting is carried out parcel by parcel, typically by hand, to ensure only the best grapes are selected in each vintage. In the cellar, vinification takes place in temperature-controlled vats, with careful extraction to preserve structure and finesse. The wines are then aged in French oak barrels (a significant proportion new, depending on the year) for around 18–20 months, allowing them to develop their hallmark combination of depth, tannic backbone and aromatic complexity.
Food & Serving
The wines in this historical collection are ideal partners for refined, richly flavored dishes that match their depth and nuance. Think roast lamb with rosemary, dry-aged ribeye, venison, or classic French preparations such as tournedos Rossini, pigeon, or slow-braised beef with truffle accents. Mature vintages also pair beautifully with hard cheeses like Comté or aged cheddar. Serve at 17–18°C (62–64°F) in large Bordeaux glasses. Older bottles, particularly 1982 and 1990, benefit from careful, shorter decanting—around 30–60 minutes, mainly to remove sediment—while younger vintages such as 2005 and 2009 may be decanted for 1–2 hours to allow the bouquet and structure to fully unfold.
Producer
Château Léoville Las Cases is one of the most revered estates in Bordeaux, classified as a Deuxième Cru (Second Growth) in the historic 1855 classification yet often considered to perform at a level rivaling the First Growths. Once part of the vast Léoville estate, it took its modern form in the 19th century and has since become the benchmark for power, longevity and refinement in Saint-Julien. Under the long-term stewardship of the Delon family, Léoville Las Cases has consistently produced some of the Médoc’s most collectible and age-worthy wines, with vintages like 1982, 1990, 2000, 2005 and 2009 regularly cited among the greatest Bordeaux of their respective years. This Collection Miroir – Millésimes Historiques case is a testament to the estate’s enduring legacy and its pivotal role in the story of classic Bordeaux.
