Description

Chateau Le Thil Pessac-Léognan 2018 is a refined red from one of Bordeaux’s most historic gravel terroirs, crafted under the stewardship of the team behind Château Smith Haut Lafitte. This wine brings together Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot in a classic Left Bank style, balancing ripe fruit with elegant structure and a subtle smoky edge. With roots that once formed part of the original Smith Haut Lafitte estate, Chateau Le Thil offers an authentic taste of Pessac-Léognan at a particularly compelling quality-to-price ratio.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Chateau Le Thil shows a deep, vibrant ruby colour with a purple hue at the rim, hinting at both youth and concentration. The nose opens with aromas of blackcurrant, ripe plum and black cherry, followed by notes of graphite, cedar, tobacco leaf and a gentle touch of toasted spice and cocoa. With some air, more classic Pessac-Léognan nuances emerge: a whiff of pencil shavings, subtle smoke and a delicate floral lift. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied with a polished texture and finely grained tannins. Dark berry fruit is layered with savoury tones of cedar, forest floor and a faint mineral streak from the gravelly soils. The Cabernet brings structure and freshness, while the Merlot adds flesh and roundness through the mid-palate. The finish is long and poised, with lingering notes of spice, tobacco and dark fruit. Enjoyable now with a short decant, this 2018 has the balance and backbone to age gracefully for 8–12 years from vintage, gaining complexity and softer tannins over time.

Production
Chateau Le Thil lies in Pessac-Léognan, just outside Bordeaux, on classic Garonne gravel soils with clay and sand subsoils that naturally favour Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The estate benefits from a temperate climate, moderated by nearby forests and the river, allowing for slow, even ripening. Grapes are typically harvested parcel by parcel at optimal maturity, with careful sorting to ensure only healthy, fully ripe berries make it into the winery. Vinification follows modern Bordeaux know-how with traditional sensibilities: fermentation in temperature-controlled vats, gentle extraction to preserve finesse, and maturation in French oak barrels (a portion new) to integrate tannins and add complexity without overwhelming the fruit. The result is a wine that clearly expresses its Pessac-Léognan origins, with both elegance and a distinctive smoky, gravelly character.

Food & Serving
Chateau Le Thil Pessac-Léognan 2018 is a versatile partner for classic French and modern cuisine alike. It pairs beautifully with roast lamb, entrecôte steak, duck breast, veal chops, game birds, mushroom dishes, and hearty vegetable gratins or lentil stews. The wine shows best at 16–18°C; if it is too warm, the alcohol will dominate, and if too cold, the aromatics and texture will be muted. For current drinking, decanting for 45–60 minutes helps the bouquet open and softens the tannins. As the wine gains a few more years in bottle, a shorter 30-minute decant is usually sufficient to reveal its full aromatic complexity.

Producer
Chateau Le Thil Comte Clary has a rich and somewhat unusual history in Pessac-Léognan. Once part of the original Smith Haut Lafitte vineyards, its wines were for a time bottled under the name Le Désert until the late 1950s, and the estate was later leased to Château Carbonnieux in the 1970s. After passing to the de Laitre family, extensive replanting began in the 1990s, and the property was renamed Chateau Le Thil Comte Clary to avoid confusion with other Bordeaux châteaux. In 2011, Florence and Daniel Cathiard, owners of the highly regarded Château Smith Haut Lafitte, acquired the estate, integrating much of its land back into the original holdings and undertaking significant vineyard replanting and cellar renovation, as well as creating a small hotel among the vines. Today, Chateau Le Thil stands as a refined satellite to Smith Haut Lafitte, benefiting from the same exacting viticultural and winemaking standards and contributing meaningfully to the reputation of Pessac-Léognan as a source of characterful, ageworthy reds.
