Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Lagrange shows a deep dark red core with vibrant purple highlights, promising both youth and energy. The nose opens on pure red fruit—fresh strawberry, raspberry and redcurrant—layered with hints of black cherry, violet, cedar shavings and a subtle graphite edge, all framed by discreet, well-integrated oak. On the palate, the attack is smooth and fleshy, with a generous, mouthfilling texture that quickly gives way to the firm backbone of Cabernet Sauvignon. The tannins are powerful yet finely grained, lending structure without heaviness, and there is a lovely sense of harmony from start to finish. Fresh acidity keeps the red fruit notes bright and lifted, while nuances of tobacco leaf, cacao and a touch of spice emerge on the long, elegant finish. With its balance of intensity and finesse, this 2021 has a broad drinking window, showing beautifully from around 2025 and with the potential to evolve gracefully in bottle through 2050.

Production
Château Lagrange lies in the heart of Saint-Julien, on the gravelly rises that have long defined the commune’s reputation for finesse and consistency. The vineyards are planted predominantly to Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot and Petit Verdot, with an average vine age of around 35 years. For the 2021 Grand Vin, the blend is 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot and 2% Petit Verdot, all hand-harvested and rigorously sorted—each berry passes through an optical sorting system to ensure only perfectly ripe fruit is used. Fermentation takes place parcel by parcel in a striking array of oak, concrete and stainless-steel vats ranging from 6,000 to 22,000 liters, allowing each plot and grape variety to be vinified with precision. After extensive tastings in January, the final blend for Le Grand Vin is assembled, then aged for about 21 months in French oak barrels from six different coopers, with traditional fining using fresh egg whites before bottling.

Food & Serving
This structured yet refined Saint-Julien is an excellent partner for classic dishes such as roasted lamb with herbs, entrecôte or ribeye with bearnaise, duck breast, and game birds like pigeon or pheasant. Its lively acidity and red-fruited profile also work beautifully with mushroom-based dishes, truffle risotto, or hard cheeses such as Comté and aged Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C after, ideally, one to two hours in a decanter in its youth to allow the tannins to soften and the bouquet to unfurl; older bottles will need gentler and shorter aeration.

Château Lagrange is one of Saint-Julien’s historic estates, officially recognized as a 3ème Cru Classé in the landmark 1855 Classification. Like many Bordeaux châteaux, it has experienced both peaks and troughs over the centuries, but few came as close to disappearing as Lagrange did in the decades following World War II, when economic pressure forced a steady sale of vineyard land that later formed the basis of properties such as Château du Glana, Château Lalande-Borie and, in part, Château Gloria. The turning point arrived in 1983, when the Japanese Suntory Group acquired the estate and launched a comprehensive, no-expense-spared restoration of both vineyards and cellar. From just 48 hectares under vine at the time, Lagrange now cultivates more than 120 hectares, focused on Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Massive investment in precision viticulture and state-of-the-art vinification has propelled Château Lagrange back to the top tier of Saint-Julien, once again challenging its Second and Third Growth peers and affirming its status as one of the appellation’s most reliable and exciting names.
