Description
Château Lafite Rothschild is one of the most iconic names in fine wine, and the 1980 vintage offers a more approachable glimpse into this legendary Pauillac estate. A classified Premier Cru since 1855, Lafite has long been associated with elegance, restraint, and historic prestige.
Tasting Notes
Robert Parker described the 1980 as a lightweight, agreeable wine with a moderately intense bouquet of cassis and fresh tobacco. On the palate it is soft and charming, showing the classic Lafite signature in a gentler, more understated vintage style. Best enjoyed now, with little to no further aging expected to add value.
Production
Château Lafite Rothschild is located in Pauillac in Bordeaux’s Médoc region, on gravelly soils that are particularly well suited to Cabernet-driven wines. The estate follows traditional methods with strict yield control, manual harvesting, and careful handwork throughout the year, while minimizing chemical inputs and favoring organic fertilization to support vine longevity.
Food & Serving
This is a graceful red wine that pairs well with roast lamb, beef tenderloin, duck, and mushroom-based dishes. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider a short decant if the bottle has been stored for a long time to help it open gently in the glass.
Producer
Domaines Barons de Rothschild Lafite is one of the most celebrated wine names in the world, with Château Lafite Rothschild at its heart. The estate’s history dates back to 1234, and it rose to lasting fame under the Ségur family before becoming part of the Rothschild legacy in the modern era. Today, it remains a benchmark for Bordeaux excellence and one of the most sought-after producers globally.
