Description

Château La Gaffelière G de la Gaffelière Episode II Chardonnay brings a Burgundian-inspired elegance into the heart of Bordeaux. Crafted by the historic Saint-Émilion estate Château La Gaffelière, this rare Chardonnay from a region better known for reds offers a fresh, refined and quietly luxurious expression of the grape. It’s a wine for those who appreciate classic French Chardonnay, but are curious to explore it through the lens of a great right-bank producer.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Chardonnay typically shows a pale straw to light gold hue with bright, youthful reflections. The nose tends to be refined rather than opulent, leaning toward citrus and orchard fruit—think lemon zest, pear and green apple—supported by subtle floral notes and a touch of stone or chalky minerality. Gentle hints of white peach, brioche or toasted nuts may appear depending on the élevage. On the palate, expect a balanced, medium-bodied white with a lively line of acidity that keeps it precise and refreshing. Citrus and crisp apple flavors are often layered with riper elements like pear and a light creamy texture, suggesting careful work on the lees rather than heavy oak. The finish is clean, mineral and persistent, emphasizing freshness over richness. In typical vintages, this style of Chardonnay is best enjoyed within a few years of release for its vibrant fruit and energy, though a short period in bottle can add a touch of complexity and roundness.

Production
G de la Gaffelière Episode II Chardonnay is grown in selected vineyard parcels in Bordeaux, where cooler exposures and well-drained, limestone-influenced soils favor finesse and tension in white wines. Chardonnay is not a traditional grape of the region, so the estate works carefully in the vineyard, focusing on optimal ripeness and healthy fruit, often with selective, plot-by-plot harvesting. In the cellar, the winemaking aims for purity and balance: gentle pressing of whole or carefully destemmed grapes, cool fermentations to preserve aromatics, and a thoughtful maturation regime that may combine stainless steel and a measured use of oak and/or extended lees contact. The result is a Chardonnay that feels French to its core—precise, textural and terroir-driven—yet distinctively Bordelais in its restraint.

Food & Serving
This Chardonnay is a versatile partner at the table and shines with refined, delicately flavored dishes. Pair it with shellfish (oysters, scallops, langoustines), grilled or poached white fish, sushi, or classic French fare like roast chicken, veal in a light cream sauce, or a goat’s cheese tart. It also works beautifully with soft-rind cheeses and simple plates of charcuterie and crudités. Serve well-chilled but not icy, ideally around 10–12°C (50–54°F), to allow the aromas and texture to open up. A brief splash in a carafe or a few minutes in the glass is usually enough; extended decanting is not necessary, as the wine’s charm lies in its freshness and precision.

Producer
Château La Gaffelière is one of Saint-Émilion’s historic estates, classified as Premier Grand Cru Classé and with roots that trace back centuries on the limestone slopes just south of the village. Long celebrated for its elegant, age-worthy Merlot- and Cabernet Franc–based reds, the château has increasingly explored whites as a way to express its terroir in a different register. G de la Gaffelière represents this more exploratory, contemporary side of the domaine: a premium, small-production range that leverages the estate’s deep knowledge of viticulture and meticulous cellar work. By crafting a Bordeaux-grown Chardonnay, Château La Gaffelière underlines its role as both a guardian of tradition and a thoughtful innovator within the region.
