Description
Château Grillet Condrieu La Carthery 2021 is a refined, single-vineyard expression of Viognier from one of the Rhône Valley’s most storied estates. Crafted in tiny quantities, this cuvée captures the essence of Condrieu’s famed perfume and texture while showcasing the particular character of the La Carthery site. It’s a wine for those who appreciate intensity, precision, and the ability of great white Rhône to evolve beautifully in the cellar.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 La Carthery displays a bright, luminous straw-gold hue with subtle green reflections, signaling both freshness and concentration. The nose is immediately expressive and layered: ripe white peach, apricot, and nectarine are intertwined with notes of orange blossom, jasmine, and hints of bergamot. With air, deeper nuances of fresh almond, honeysuckle, crushed stone, and a gentle touch of vanilla and spice emerge.
On the palate, this is a structured, textural Viognier with Condrieu’s trademark opulence kept in perfect check by a lively, saline backbone. Expect a generous core of stone fruit and citrus—apricot, mandarin, and Meyer lemon—supported by subtle floral and herbal tones. The mid-palate is silky and mouth-filling, yet the finish is long, precise, and mineral-driven, with a fine bitterness reminiscent of citrus zest that adds definition. While already captivating in its youth, the 2021 has the balance and acidity to develop over 5–8 years, gaining complexity, honeyed nuances, and greater depth if well cellared.
Production
La Carthery comes from steep, terraced vineyards in the northern Rhône, rooted in poor, decomposed granite soils that naturally limit yields and intensify flavor. The vines, planted on sun-drenched slopes overlooking the Rhône River, benefit from excellent drainage, significant diurnal temperature swings, and the region’s characteristic breezes, which help preserve freshness and aromatic purity. Harvest is carried out by hand in small crates, with strict sorting in the vineyard and at the cellar to retain only perfectly ripe, healthy Viognier grapes. Vinification is typically gentle and precise: a slow, controlled pressing, followed by fermentation in a combination of neutral and selected oak barrels, allows for texture and complexity without overwhelming the grape’s natural perfume. Lees aging, with periodic bâtonnage depending on the vintage character, adds creaminess and depth while preserving a crisp, mineral-driven profile.
Food & Serving
Château Grillet Condrieu La Carthery 2021 is a superb match for refined, aromatic cuisine. It shines with dishes such as butter-poached lobster, seared scallops, turbot with beurre blanc, or roast chicken with fresh tarragon. Its stone-fruit and floral character also pairs beautifully with mildly spiced Asian dishes, such as lemongrass prawns or Thai-influenced fish curries, as well as creamy goat’s cheeses and semi-soft cheeses. Serve slightly chilled, ideally at 10–12°C, to highlight its freshness and aromatics without muting its texture. A short decant of 20–30 minutes can help the wine open up and reveal its full range of aromas, especially in its first few years after release.
Producer
Château Grillet is one of the Rhône Valley’s most historic and distinctive estates, long renowned for producing some of the world’s most characterful Viognier. Once its own tiny monopole appellation nestled within the hills of Condrieu, the estate has played a pivotal role in preserving and elevating the reputation of Viognier at a time when the grape had nearly vanished from its homeland. Today, under meticulous, quality-focused ownership and management, Château Grillet continues to be a benchmark for precision, elegance, and age-worthy white Rhône. Its limited production, steep terraced vineyards, and relentless attention to detail in both vineyard and cellar have cemented its status as a reference-point producer in the northern Rhône, highly sought after by collectors and serious wine lovers around the world.
