Description
Château d’Yquem is one of the world’s most celebrated sweet wines, and the 1995 vintage continues that legendary reputation in a beautifully balanced half-bottle format. Made from botrytised Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon from Sauternes, it combines richness, precision, and extraordinary longevity. As the only estate in Sauternes to receive Premier Cru Supérieur status in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification, Yquem stands alone in history and prestige.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it typically shows a brilliant golden hue that deepens with age, hinting at its concentration and complexity. The nose is often layered with aromas of honey, apricot, candied citrus, orange marmalade, saffron, and toasted nuts, lifted by the distinctive perfume of noble rot.
On the palate, Château d’Yquem is famously opulent yet remarkably fresh, with a perfect balance of sweetness, acidity, and texture. Expect a rich, silky mouthfeel and a long, persistent finish that can develop further over decades, making this a wine with exceptional aging potential.
Production
The wine comes from the highest hill in Sauternes, where the gravelly terroir and local microclimate create ideal conditions for botrytis cinerea, or noble rot. Grapes are harvested by hand in multiple selective passes, with only perfectly botrytised berries chosen for the final wine. The blend is traditionally dominated by Sémillon, supported by Sauvignon Blanc, and vinification is carried out with extreme care to preserve aromatic intensity, finesse, and the estate’s signature concentration.
Food & Serving
Château d’Yquem pairs beautifully with foie gras, blue cheese, fruit-based desserts, tarte Tatin, or simply enjoyed on its own as a special occasion wine. Serve chilled, ideally around 8–10°C, to allow the aromas and sweetness to show at their best. Decanting is generally not necessary for a younger bottle, but an older vintage may benefit from a gentle decant if sediment is present.
Producer
Château d’Yquem has been shaping the identity of Sauternes for more than 400 years and remains the benchmark for noble rot sweet wine. Its reputation was cemented by the 1855 Bordeaux Classification, where it alone was granted Premier Cru Supérieur status. Across generations, the estate has become synonymous with rarity, meticulous selection, and some of the most age-worthy dessert wines ever made.
