Description
Château de Rayne Vigneau 2020 is a classic Sauternes from one of the appellation’s historic Grand Cru Classé estates. Perched on one of the highest points in the region, just below Château d’Yquem, it combines botrytis-driven richness with the fresh, lifted finish that makes fine Sauternes so captivating.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, expect a bright golden colour that reflects both concentration and purity. The nose is layered and expressive, with notes of honey, candied citrus, apricot, ripe peach, and subtle floral tones, all shaped by the noble rot that defines great Sauternes.
On the palate, the wine is silky and nectar-like, yet balanced by vibrant acidity that keeps the sweetness in check. Flavours of orchard fruit, marmalade, and almond unfold gradually, finishing long and fresh. This is a wine with excellent ageing potential, and the 2020 vintage should continue to develop complexity over many years, gaining even more depth and nuance.
Production
Château de Rayne Vigneau is located on a gravel hill near Bommes in the Sauternes appellation, where morning mists from the Ciron encourage the development of botrytis cinerea, or noble rot. The estate’s 84 hectares are planted mainly to Sémillon, with Sauvignon Blanc and a touch of Muscadelle, and the grapes are harvested entirely by hand in multiple passes, selecting only berries at the perfect stage of concentration. Vinification focuses on preserving the intense sweetness, aromatic complexity, and freshness that define top Sauternes.
Food & Serving
This wine is a superb match for foie gras, blue cheeses such as Roquefort, fruit-based desserts, or simply a bowl of fresh stone fruit. It also works beautifully with lightly spiced Asian cuisine. Serve chilled at around 8–10°C, and decanting is generally not necessary, although a brief aeration can help the wine open up if served young.
Producer
Château de Rayne Vigneau has been an important name in Sauternes since the 1855 classification, when it was recognised as a Premier Grand Cru Classé. The estate took its current name in honour of Madame de Rayne, who purchased the property in 1834, and today it remains one of the most respected producers in the region. With its dramatic hillside vineyard and long-standing reputation for elegant, ageworthy sweet wines, it continues to be a benchmark for the appellation.
