Description

Charvin Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2020 in magnum is a deeply expressive, traditionally crafted Rhône red that showcases the purity and energy of Grenache from one of the appellation’s most respected estates. Bottled in the generous 1.5L format, it offers both immediate charm and serious cellaring potential. This cuvée is a classic Southern Rhône blend dominated by old-vine Grenache and raised entirely in concrete, preserving its vivid fruit and unmistakable sense of place.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Charvin Châteauneuf-du-Pape shows a vibrant, medium-deep ruby color with a lively, youthful rim. The nose is precise and lifted, opening with ripe red fruits—think wild strawberries, raspberries, and red cherries—supported by notes of blackberry, black licorice, and the classic garrigue of the region: dried thyme, lavender, and a hint of rosemary. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied yet refined, with a layered texture and beautifully integrated tannins. The Grenache brings generosity and sweet-toned fruit, while Mourvèdre and Syrah add depth, spice, and structure. Subtle herbal and floral nuances weave through the rich core of fruit, all carried by a fresh, mouthwatering acidity that keeps the wine lively rather than heavy. The finish is long, savory, and persistent, with lingering notes of licorice, dried herbs, and dark berries. In magnum, this 2020 has excellent aging potential; it will drink well from now but should evolve gracefully for 12–18 years, gaining complexity and silkier texture over time.

Production
The fruit for Charvin’s Châteauneuf-du-Pape comes from estate vineyards in the cooler, northwestern sector of the appellation, where a mix of classic galets roulés (rounded river stones), sandy soils, and limestone-based subsoils help produce wines of both power and finesse. The vines—many of them old Grenache—are hand-harvested at optimal ripeness, with strict selection in the vineyard to ensure healthy, concentrated fruit. The blend in 2020 is 82% Grenache, 5% Mourvèdre, 5% Syrah, with the balance made up of equal parts Vaccarèse and Counoise. Charvin vinifies traditionally, favoring whole-cluster fermentation and indigenous yeasts, followed by 21 months of élevage in concrete tanks rather than small oak barrels. This approach preserves aromatic purity, highlights terroir, and emphasizes texture and freshness over overt oak influence.

Food & Serving
This 2020 Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a superb partner for hearty, flavorful dishes: think roast lamb with herbs de Provence, grilled ribeye, duck breast with berry or cherry jus, or slow-braised beef and game stews. It also pairs beautifully with Mediterranean flavors such as ratatouille, roasted root vegetables, mushroom dishes, and aged hard cheeses like Comté or Manchego. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to showcase both fruit and spice. In its youth, decanting for 1–2 hours helps the wine open up and soften the tannins; as it ages, a gentle 30–60 minute decant will be enough to bring out its full aromatic complexity, especially from magnum.

Producer
Domaine Charvin is a family-run estate based in the village of Châteauneuf-du-Pape in the Southern Rhône, with roots that stretch back to the mid-19th century. Over generations, the Charvin family has built a reputation for producing some of the appellation’s most classical, terroir-driven wines, emphasizing finesse, freshness, and drinkability over sheer power. Renowned for their traditional methods—no new barriques, extensive use of concrete, and a strong reliance on old-vine Grenache—Charvin wines are frequently singled out by critics and enthusiasts as benchmarks for elegant, age-worthy Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Their commitment to meticulous vineyard work and restrained, thoughtful winemaking has made the domaine a reference point in the region for authentic, unadorned Rhône reds.
