Description
Chartogne-Taillet Champagne Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs Hors Série Avize Extra Brut 2020 is a precise, terroir-driven Champagne crafted from Chardonnay grown in the legendary Grand Cru village of Avize. This limited cuvée showcases the tension, chalky finesse and finely etched citrus character that make Côte des Blancs Blanc de Blancs so sought-after. Extra Brut dosage keeps the wine incisive and pure, allowing the vineyard’s mineral voice to shine through with exceptional clarity.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Champagne shows a pale straw to light gold hue, edged with green reflections and a very fine, persistent bead. The nose is focused and detailed, opening with lemon zest, white grapefruit and crisp green apple, followed by notes of chalk dust, fresh brioche, almond blossom and a delicate hint of white peach and flint.
On the palate, the wine is taut, linear and deeply mineral, balancing bright citrus and orchard fruit with a palpable chalky texture. Layers of Meyer lemon, crunchy pear and underripe stone fruit are wrapped in saline, almost iodine-like nuances, with subtle pastry and hazelnut tones emerging as the wine warms in the glass. The extra-brut dosage keeps the finish laser-focused, long and mouthwatering. While already impressive in its youth, this 2020 has the structure and acidity to evolve beautifully over 7–10 years, gaining more creaminess, complexity and brioche-driven depth with time in bottle.
Production
Sourced from Grand Cru Chardonnay vineyards in Avize, this Hors Série cuvée reflects the classic Côte des Blancs terroir of pure chalk and limestone subsoils, which lend the wine its signature tension and mineral backbone. The grapes are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness to preserve both freshness and aromatic definition. In keeping with Chartogne-Taillet’s philosophy, vinification is carried out with minimal intervention: gentle pressing, fermentations in a mix of stainless steel and oak (depending on parcel and vintage), and careful élevage on the lees to build texture without masking the purity of the fruit. The wine is bottled for secondary fermentation and aged on its lees to gain complexity before being disgorged with a restrained Extra Brut dosage, highlighting the precision and energy of this Grand Cru Chardonnay.
Food & Serving
This Champagne is a superb partner for refined, mineral-driven dishes: think oysters on the half shell, scallop crudo, turbot or sole with beurre blanc, sushi and sashimi, or a simple tartare of sea bass and citrus. It also pairs beautifully with goat’s cheese, fresh young cheeses, or delicate poultry in light cream sauces. Serve well-chilled at around 8–10°C (46–50°F). A brief 10–15 minutes in the glass or a short, gentle decant in a chilled carafe can help the wine open aromatically, especially in its youth, revealing more nuance and depth without sacrificing its precision.
Producer
Chartogne-Taillet is one of the benchmark grower-producers in Champagne, based in the village of Merfy in the Montagne de Reims. Under the stewardship of Alexandre Chartogne, the estate has gained a devoted following for its vineyard-first approach, meticulous parcel selection and sensitive, low-intervention winemaking. Drawing inspiration from both Champagne tradition and Burgundian terroir study, Chartogne-Taillet bottles many site-specific cuvées that express the nuances of soil and exposition with unusual clarity. Their work has been instrumental in elevating the reputation of grower Champagnes on the global stage, with critics and collectors alike seeking out their limited cuvées—such as this Hors Série Avize—for their authenticity, energy and singular sense of place.
