Description

Chapoutier Ermitage L'Oree 2010 is a benchmark white Hermitage, crafted from old-vine Marsanne on one of the Rhône Valley’s most revered hillsides. This is a powerful yet finely detailed white wine that marries richness, minerality, and remarkable longevity. Sourced from some of the appellation’s oldest vines, L’Oree has long been considered one of the great, collectible white wines of France, capable of evolving beautifully for decades.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2010 L’Oree shows a deep golden hue with youthful brightness at the rim, reflecting both its concentration and its gradual development in bottle. The nose is complex and layered, with aromas of acacia blossom, honeysuckle, ripe peach, baked pear, and apricot, interwoven with notes of beeswax, almond cream, fennel, and a distinct wet-stone minerality. Subtle accents of honey, spice, and toasted hazelnut emerge as it opens in the glass. On the palate, this is a full-bodied, textural Marsanne with impressive depth and structure. Flavors of ripe stone fruit, preserved lemon, and yellow plum are supported by a firm, saline backbone and a gentle, mouthcoating viscosity. The mid-palate is rich yet never heavy, lifted by a precise line of acidity and a persistent mineral drive. Hints of lanolin, brioche, and floral honey appear on the long, resonant finish. The 2010 vintage is known for its balance and aging potential; this wine is already complex but still on a long evolutionary curve, with easily 10–15+ years of further development in a proper cellar, gaining more truffle, nutty, and tertiary notes over time.

Production
L’Oree is sourced from the Les Murets sector on the eastern side of the Hermitage hill, where old Marsanne vines – many over 60–70 years of age – are rooted in a mix of clay, alluvial stones, and decomposed granite. This terroir delivers both power and tension, translating directly into the wine’s depth and minerality. Farmed biodynamically under M. Chapoutier’s long-standing commitment to organic and biodynamic viticulture, the grapes are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, with strict sorting to ensure only the healthiest, most concentrated fruit makes it into the cellar. Vinification typically involves gentle pressing followed by fermentation in a combination of oak barrels (a proportion new, carefully calibrated to avoid overpowering the fruit) and sometimes large wooden vats, with regular bâtonnage (lees stirring) to build texture and complexity. Aging on the lees enhances the wine’s creamy mouthfeel and aromatic complexity, while preserving the signature tension and mineral backbone of great white Hermitage.

Food & Serving
Chapoutier Ermitage L'Oree 2010 is a superb partner for refined, richly flavored dishes. It shines alongside roasted poultry with morel cream sauce, lobster or langoustines with butter and herbs, seared scallops, turbot or monkfish, and delicately spiced dishes such as saffron-infused risottos or creamy truffle pasta. It also pairs beautifully with aged Comté, Beaufort, or other firm mountain cheeses. Serve slightly cool, around 11–13°C (52–55°F), to allow the full aromatic range to express itself. Decanting for 30–60 minutes before service is recommended, especially at this stage in its evolution, to help the wine open and reveal its layered complexity.

Producer
M. Chapoutier is one of the most emblematic producers in the Rhône Valley, with roots dating back to 1808 and a reputation for crafting some of the region’s most profound wines. Under Michel Chapoutier’s leadership since the late 20th century, the estate has become a pioneer of biodynamic viticulture and terroir-driven winemaking, bottling numerous single-vineyard ‘Sélections Parcellaires’ that highlight the nuances of individual sites. Hermitage is at the heart of the Domaine’s identity, and cuvées like Ermitage L’Oree have helped define what great white Rhône can be on the world stage. Consistently praised by international critics and collectors, Chapoutier’s wines are seen as reference points for their appellations, combining tradition, meticulous vineyard work, and precision in the cellar.
