Chanin’s Sanford & Benedict Vineyard Chardonnay 2021 is a beautifully mineral, intensely focused white from one of Santa Barbara County’s most revered old-vine sites. Sourced from vines planted in 1971, it reflects both the pedigree of the vineyard and Gavin Chanin’s precise, elegant style, making it a standout expression of Californian Chardonnay.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Chardonnay shows a poised, bright profile with layered depth and a refined, luminous character. The aromatics lift with fresh apple, pear, pineapple, buttered popcorn, and a subtle struck-match note, giving the wine both richness and tension. On the palate, it unfolds with baked apple, cantaloupe, elderflower, citrus, almond, and a delicate hint of vanilla. The texture is clean and concentrated, with mineral drive and impressive balance. It has excellent drinking appeal now, but should also evolve gracefully over the next several years, gaining more complexity and nuance.

Production
The grapes come from the historic Sanford & Benedict Vineyard in Santa Barbara County, one of the region’s benchmark Chardonnay sites and home to some of the oldest vines in the area. Harvested for freshness and precision, the wine was gently pressed, then aged on its lees in French oak for 15 months before being bottled unfined and unfiltered to preserve texture, character, and site expression.

Food & Serving
This Chardonnay pairs beautifully with roasted chicken, lobster, seared scallops, grilled salmon, creamy pasta dishes, or mushroom risotto. Serve chilled at around 10–12°C, and consider brief decanting if you want the aromatics to open up further in the glass.
