Description

Champagne Lété-Vautrain Brut Côte 204 is a refined grower Champagne that captures both the finesse of the region and a powerful sense of place. Named after the historic Côte 204 hillside, the site of intense battles in 1918 near Château-Thierry, this cuvée is a tribute to resilience and to the land that now yields grapes of remarkable character. Crafted from a carefully balanced blend of Pinot Meunier, Chardonnay, and Pinot Noir, it offers an elegant, food-friendly style with impressive depth for its category.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Champagne Lété-Vautrain Brut Côte 204 shows a deep golden-yellow hue with a fine, persistent mousse that hints at its extended aging in the cellar. The nose opens with clean, elegant aromas, where juicy green apple, fresh peach and ripe apricot take the lead, supported by subtle brioche and a light floral touch. On the palate, this Champagne is well-balanced, round and complex, with a lively, finely textured effervescence. Notes of stone fruit and citrus are layered with hints of dried fruit and gentle pastry tones, giving both immediate charm and a sense of structure. The finish is long and precise, carried by fresh acidity and a dry, Brut profile thanks to a modest dosage of 5 g/l. With three years of maturation before release, it drinks beautifully now but has the backbone to evolve gracefully over the next several years, gaining more nutty, honeyed nuances with time.

Production
Brut Côte 204 is sourced from vineyards around the historic Côte 204 slope in the Champagne region of France, an area characterized by cool climate conditions and predominantly chalky and limestone-rich soils that lend precision and tension to the wines. The blend is composed of 50% Pinot Meunier, 25% Chardonnay and 25% Pinot Noir, reflecting the classic structure of the Champagne terroir and emphasizing the fruit-driven charm of Meunier. Grapes are harvested by hand to ensure careful selection, then gently pressed to preserve purity and freshness. After primary fermentation, the wine undergoes its second fermentation in bottle and is aged for three years on the lees in the cellar, building texture and complexity. A low dosage of 5 g/l keeps the style firmly in the Brut spectrum, highlighting minerality and fruit rather than sweetness.

Food & Serving
This cuvée is ideally suited as an elegant aperitif, where its bright fruit and fine mousse can really shine. At the table, it pairs beautifully with pork dishes, shellfish, and rich, fatty fish such as salmon or tuna, whose texture is lifted by the wine’s vibrant acidity and dry finish. It also works wonderfully with mild, soft cheeses, offering a refreshing counterpoint to their creaminess. Serve well chilled at around 8–10°C (46–50°F). While decanting is not necessary, pouring the wine into proper tulip-shaped Champagne glasses and giving it a few minutes in the glass will allow the aromas to open fully.

Producer
Lété-Vautrain is a family-run Champagne house based in the broader Champagne region, working primarily with its own vineyards to offer characterful, terroir-driven cuvées. Situated near the historic Côte 204 hillside close to Château-Thierry, the domaine is deeply connected to a landscape marked by both viticultural heritage and the events of World War I. Over the years, Lété-Vautrain has built a quiet reputation among Champagne lovers for honest, well-crafted wines that overdeliver in quality, as reflected in solid critical recognition such as the 90 points awarded by James Suckling for this Brut Côte 204. The house focuses on traditional methods, extended aging and precise blending to express the nuances of its terroir in a refined, accessible style.
