Description
Krug Grande Cuvée Brut 173ème Édition is the house’s signature multi-vintage Champagne, presented here in an elegant gift box that underlines its status as a truly special bottle. Created to express the most complete harmony of Champagne, it blends more than a decade of reserve wines with a single base harvest to achieve remarkable depth and consistency. This cuvée stands apart as a benchmark for prestige non-vintage Champagne, reflecting Krug’s historic vision since 1843 of crafting the fullest expression of Champagne every year.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Krug Grande Cuvée 173ème Édition shines with a luminous golden color and a fine, persistent mousse that forms a delicate bead. The nose is complex and layered, offering notes of toasted brioche, hazelnut, almond, and pastry cream wrapped around citrus peel, ripe orchard fruits, and hints of dried flowers and honey.
On the palate, this Champagne is both rich and precise, with a creamy, enveloping texture balanced by a vibrant, refreshing acidity. Flavors of baked apple, lemon curd, candied citrus, marzipan, and roasted nuts unfold with subtle hints of ginger, nougat, and chalky minerality. The finish is long, elegant, and saline, inviting another sip. While beautifully open and expressive on release, the 173ème Édition has excellent aging potential; cellaring for 10–15 years (or more in ideal conditions) will bring additional complexity, nuttiness, and depth.
Production
Krug Grande Cuvée 173ème Édition is crafted from a meticulous blend of wines sourced from selected villages across Champagne, including some of the region’s finest crus. The terroir ranges from chalk-rich slopes that give tension and minerality to more clay-limestone parcels that confer richness and structure. Grapes—primarily Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Meunier—are harvested by hand to ensure precise selection of perfectly ripe fruit. Each individual plot is vinified separately in small oak casks, a traditional Krug hallmark that enhances texture and aromatic complexity. After blending dozens of wines from multiple vintages to achieve the house’s signature profile, the cuvée undergoes second fermentation in bottle and spends many years on its lees in Krug’s cellars before disgorgement, allowing the wine to develop its characteristic depth, finesse, and harmony.
Food & Serving
This Champagne is a versatile partner at the table, capable of elevating both refined dishes and simple, high-quality ingredients. It pairs beautifully with seafood such as oysters, scallops, lobster, or turbot, as well as dishes featuring truffle, roast chicken, veal, or aged Parmesan and Comté. It can also shine alongside delicate Japanese cuisine, such as sashimi or tempura, and rich, buttery sauces. Serve well-chilled, ideally around 9–11°C (48–52°F), in a generous white wine or Champagne glass to allow the aromas to fully express themselves. A brief 15–20 minutes of ‘relaxing’ in the glass or opened bottle is sufficient; extended decanting is not necessary, though gently pouring into a carafe just before serving can help the wine open if desired.
Producer
Founded in 1843 by Joseph Krug, the House of Krug in Reims is one of Champagne’s most revered names, celebrated for its uncompromising pursuit of quality and its distinctive philosophy of blending. Rather than focusing on vintage declarations alone, Krug built its reputation on the idea of creating, every year, the most generous expression of Champagne—what became known as Krug Grande Cuvée. The estate works with an intricate mosaic of plots across Champagne, carefully vinifying each parcel separately and preserving an extraordinary library of reserve wines. As a result, Krug is considered a benchmark for complexity, age-worthiness, and craftsmanship in the region, with its wines consistently earning top scores from critics and a loyal following among discerning Champagne lovers worldwide.
