Description

Krug Grande Cuvée Brut Edition 171 is the house’s ultimate expression of Champagne, crafted to deliver a sense of timeless richness in every bottle. Blending over a hundred different wines from multiple vintages, it’s designed not to showcase a single year, but the very essence of Krug’s style. This Edition follows a tradition that began in 1843, when Joseph Krug set out to create a Champagne of uncompromising quality, every year, regardless of vintage conditions.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Krug Grande Cuvée 171 shines with a deep, luminous golden hue, animated by an incredibly fine, persistent mousse. The nose is complex and layered, offering notes of toasted brioche, marzipan, hazelnut, and honeycomb, interwoven with citrus zest, ripe stone fruits, and a hint of dried flowers and nougat. On the palate, this Champagne is at once powerful and supremely elegant. Expect a rich, mouth‑filling texture with flavors of baked apple, candied citrus peel, almond cream, and fresh pastry, lifted by vibrant acidity and a saline, chalky backbone. The finish is long, precise and endlessly nuanced, revealing subtle hints of ginger, citrus oil, and roasted nuts as it lingers. Krug Grande Cuvée is released with significant aging in Krug’s cellars and has the structure to continue evolving beautifully for 10–20 years or more under proper storage, gaining further complexity, creaminess, and tertiary notes.

Production
Krug Grande Cuvée Brut Edition 171 is composed from a mosaic of parcels across Champagne’s finest terroirs, drawing on chalk-rich slopes and cool, well‑drained sites that favor concentration and tension in the fruit. Grapes of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Meunier are selected parcel by parcel, often harvested by hand at optimal ripeness to preserve both aromatic depth and natural acidity. Each plot is vinified separately, typically in small oak casks—a hallmark of Krug’s approach—which adds texture and subtle spice while allowing each base wine to fully express its origin. The final blend marries wines from the base year with many reserve wines from numerous previous vintages, followed by extended aging on the lees in bottle. This painstaking process yields a Champagne of remarkable depth, consistency, and complexity, transcending the character of any single harvest.

Food & Serving
Krug Grande Cuvée 171 is extraordinarily versatile at the table, pairing effortlessly with refined dishes such as seared scallops, lobster, turbot, or simply prepared white fish, as well as roast chicken, veal in cream sauce, or mushroom-based dishes. It also elevates aged hard cheeses, Parmesan, and Comté, and can be a luxurious partner to truffle-based cuisine or lightly spiced Asian dishes with a rich, savory core. Serve well-chilled but not icy, ideally around 10–12°C (50–54°F), in a fine white wine glass rather than a narrow flute to allow the aromas to fully open. Decanting is not customary for Champagne, but opening the bottle a few minutes before serving and letting it sit in the glass will help reveal its full aromatic complexity.

Producer
Founded in 1843 in Reims by Joseph Krug, the House of Krug is one of Champagne’s most revered names, known for its uncompromising pursuit of quality and character. From the outset, Joseph Krug’s vision was to create the best possible Champagne every year, regardless of vintage conditions, by building a library of reserve wines and vinifying each plot individually—a radical idea at the time. Today, Krug is celebrated worldwide for its meticulous craftsmanship, small-batch vinification, and long cellar aging, with Grande Cuvée standing as its signature cuvée and a benchmark for prestige multi-vintage Champagne. The house’s dedication to detail and its distinctive, layered style have earned Krug a near-mythical status among collectors, sommeliers, and Champagne lovers across the globe.
