Description
Champagne Frerejean Frères Cuvée Rosé Brut Premier Cru is a refined, non-vintage rosé Champagne crafted from Premier Cru vineyards in the heart of Champagne. Blending 60% Chardonnay and 40% Pinot Noir, this cuvée stands out for its tension between mineral precision, red-fruited charm, and exceptional finesse. With extended aging and a low dosage, it offers a level of depth and complexity rarely found in rosé Champagne at this level.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this rosé shows a delicate, shimmering salmon-pink hue with copper highlights and a very fine, persistent mousse that speaks to its long aging on the lees. The nose is expressive yet elegant, opening with notes of wild strawberries, raspberries and red currants, followed by more nuanced aromas of mirabelle plum, brioche, toasted hazelnut and a subtle chalky minerality.
On the palate, the wine is tightly dry (brut with a low dosage of around 6.5 g/L) and beautifully poised. Fresh red berries and raspberry coulis lead, supported by hints of blood orange, stone fruits and a touch of spice, all wrapped in a creamy, vinous texture from more than eight years sur lie. The bead is ultra-fine and seamlessly integrated, giving the wine an almost feather-light feel despite its depth. A long, mineral-driven finish with a faint saline edge keeps everything wonderfully refreshing. Thanks to its structure, long lees aging and precise acidity, this non-vintage cuvée has the capacity to develop additional complexity over the next 5–7 years, gaining more autolytic (brioche, nutty) notes while retaining its core of fruit.
Production
Frerejean Frères work exclusively with Premier and Grand Cru sites around Grauves in the Côte des Blancs, an area known for its chalk-rich soils that lend Champagne its hallmark tension and minerality. The blend here is 60% Chardonnay for finesse and freshness, and 40% Pinot Noir for body and red-fruit character, with about 12% of the Pinot Noir vinified as still red wine to create the rosé color and added aromatic depth. Grapes are typically hand-harvested at optimal ripeness to preserve natural acidity, and each parcel is vinified separately before blending. After the second fermentation in bottle, this cuvée is aged more than eight years on its lees (sur lie), far longer than the appellation requires, to build creaminess and complexity. A very modest dosage of around 6.5 g/L is added at disgorgement, resulting in a refined, dry Brut style that highlights terroir and texture rather than sweetness.
Food & Serving
This Champagne is a natural partner for refined seafood dishes: think oysters, langoustines, poached lobster, scallops or a classic plateau de fruits de mer, where its mineral backbone and brisk acidity cut through brininess and richness. It also pairs beautifully with sushi and sashimi, lightly cured salmon, or delicate poultry dishes, as well as charcuterie and soft, bloomy-rind cheeses. For an adventurous match, serve it alongside a dessert of dark chocolate and forest berries, where the wine’s red fruit and brioche notes play against the bitterness of the chocolate. Serve well-chilled at around 8–10°C (46–50°F). Decanting is not necessary, but pouring the wine into a larger tulip-shaped Champagne glass rather than a narrow flute will help it fully express its aromatics and fine mousse.
Producer
Frerejean Frères was founded by the Frerejean-Taittinger brothers, members of the extended Taittinger family, with the aim of crafting artisanal Champagnes that focus on Premier and Grand Cru sites rather than volume. Based around Grauves in the Côte des Blancs, the house has quickly gained recognition for its long lees aging, low dosage philosophy and emphasis on elegance over power. While relatively young as a brand compared to the great historic houses, Frerejean Frères has become a noteworthy name among Champagne enthusiasts seeking grower-style precision with a touch of grand marque polish. Their wines, all made in small batches with meticulous attention to detail, underline the quality potential of Côte des Blancs Chardonnay and carefully sourced Pinot Noir from top crus.
