Description

Cesconi Pivier 2008 is a single-vineyard Merlot from the cool, alpine-influenced hills of Trentino-Alto Adige in northern Italy. Crafted from estate-grown grapes on the Pressano hill, this wine showcases the depth and elegance Merlot can achieve in this high-altitude terroir. With over a decade and a half of bottle age, it offers a refined, mature expression of both grape and site.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Cesconi Pivier 2008 shows a deep garnet core with brickish hues toward the rim, a clear sign of its graceful evolution in bottle. The nose is complex and layered: expect aromas of dried plum, black cherry and cassis, interwoven with notes of tobacco leaf, cedar, leather, cocoa and a touch of underbrush and dried herbs. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, with a silky texture and tannins that have softened nicely with age. Flavours of ripe dark berries, stewed cherry and fig are joined by savoury nuances of graphite, spice, earthy truffle and a subtle balsamic edge. Fresh mountain-influenced acidity keeps the wine lively and balanced, leading to a long, harmonious finish. At this stage, the 2008 vintage is likely drinking at or near its peak; well-stored bottles should be enjoyed now or within the next few years, bearing in mind that older bottles may show light signs of cellar wear but can still offer excellent drinking.

Production
The Merlot for Pivier 2008 comes from Cesconi’s own vineyards on the Pressano hill at around 400 metres above sea level in Trentino-Alto Adige. Here, vines are trained in the traditional Trentino pergola system on rich, deep, fertile soils that help deliver concentration without sacrificing freshness. The site benefits from a cooling morning breeze from the north and the stronger, warmer Ora del Garda wind from Lake Garda in the afternoon, promoting healthy, slow, even ripening. Cesconi farm sustainably, using only high-quality estate fruit and paying close attention to vineyard work. Harvest is carefully timed to capture optimal ripeness, with grapes selected in the vineyard. In the cellar, the Merlot from the Pivier cru is vinified separately as a single-vineyard wine, with a classic red-wine fermentation and subsequent maturation (typically in oak) designed to enhance structure, complexity and longevity while preserving the character of the site.

Food & Serving
This mature Trentino Merlot pairs beautifully with roasted or grilled red meats, braised dishes and richly flavoured cuisine. Think roast lamb, slow-cooked beef, venison, game birds, mushroom risotto, truffle dishes and aged hard cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano or mature Asiago. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to allow the aromatics to fully open. Given the wine’s age, decant gently 30–60 minutes before serving to help it breathe and, if present, separate it from any natural sediment that has formed in the bottle.
