Description
Caymus Suisun The Walking Fool Red Blend 2021 is a generous, Zinfandel-led red with Petite Sirah adding depth, structure, and a touch of dark-fruited intensity. Sourced entirely from Suisun Valley AVA, just east of Napa Valley, it reflects a terroir that shares many of Napa’s prized growing conditions while offering its own rustic charm. The name pays tribute to winemaker Jenny Wagner’s great-great-grandfather, Johannes Glos, whose daily walk to work inspired the label’s memorable character.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep, inviting color that hints at its rich fruit core. The nose opens with dark cherries, blueberries, cigar box, sweet leather, and a subtle lift of fresh thyme.
The palate is lively and expressive, with cherry, ripe dark plum, freshly baked bread, and dark chocolate liqueur leading the way. Despite its plush fruit and supple texture, it keeps a pleasing freshness and is highly approachable from the start. The wine is enjoyable now, though it can hold for a few years if you want the flavors to knit together further.
Production
All of the fruit comes from Suisun Valley AVA, a small but highly regarded area located adjacent to Napa Valley in southeastern California. Its soils and climate are remarkably similar to Napa’s, creating excellent conditions for ripening Petite Sirah and Zinfandel with concentration and balance. The wine is aged for 16 months in a combination of American and French oak, which adds spice, texture, and a warm, rustic frame to the final blend.
Food & Serving
This is a versatile, crowd-pleasing red that works beautifully with grilled meats, barbecue, lamb chops, roasted pork, and hearty pasta dishes. It also pairs well with aged cheeses and dishes with a slightly smoky or peppery profile. Serve at around 16–18°C, and a short decant of 30–45 minutes will help open up the aromas and soften the wine even further.
Producer
Caymus Vineyards is one of California’s most recognized premium wine producers, long associated with rich, expressive wines from Napa Valley and beyond. The Wagner family has built a strong reputation for crafting approachable yet serious wines with broad appeal and consistent quality. With The Walking Fool, Caymus Suisun extends that style into Suisun Valley, highlighting both the region’s potential and the family’s continued winemaking influence.
