Description

Catena Zapata Nicasia Malbec Argentino 2018 is a striking, high-altitude red that showcases the power and finesse of Mendoza’s Uco Valley. Made from Malbec with Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot, it offers depth, structure, and a distinctly modern Argentine profile rooted in one of the country’s most celebrated wine families.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it typically shows a deep, vivid ruby-purple color with excellent concentration. The nose is layered and expressive, with aromas of ripe blackberries, plum, violets, graphite, sweet spice, and a touch of cocoa or tobacco. On the palate, this wine is full-bodied and finely structured, with dense dark fruit, firm yet polished tannins, and bright freshness that keeps it balanced and lifted. The Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot add extra backbone, complexity, and length, while the Malbec delivers signature plushness and floral character. It has the concentration and structure to age gracefully for many years, developing greater nuance with cellaring.

Production
Sourced from the Uco Valley, where high-altitude vineyards, intense sunlight, and cool nights help preserve acidity and aromatic intensity, this wine reflects the dramatic terroir of Mendoza’s mountain foothills. The grapes are carefully harvested to capture optimal ripeness and freshness, then vinified with an emphasis on precision and balance to highlight both fruit purity and structure.

Food & Serving
This is an excellent match for grilled ribeye, slow-roasted lamb, venison, or richly flavored dishes with herbs and smoke. It also pairs well with hard cheeses and earthy mushroom-based plates. Serve at around 16–18°C and consider decanting for 1–2 hours to allow the wine to open fully.

Producer
Catena Zapata is one of Argentina’s most respected and influential wineries, credited with elevating Malbec to international prestige. Founded in the late 19th century and driven in recent decades by the Catena family’s pioneering work in high-altitude viticulture, the estate is a benchmark for quality in Mendoza. Its wines are known for combining regional identity, precision, and age-worthy structure, earning widespread acclaim around the world.

This Malbec is special because it comes from the high-altitude Nicasia Vineyard. What I love is the balance: it’s rich and deep, but never heavy. It has dark berry fruit with a polished texture, bright acidity, and a long, classy finish. A serious Malbec that feels more “Grand Cru”.
